synchros?

hey guys, i have recently been having problems with 2nd gear grinding during a 5k and higher rpm upshift. I have searched and it didnt take long to see this is a very common problem. I have seen in some threads that people have had the synchros replaced by the dealer. Since i am broke and prefer to do it myself i was wondering if there is anywhere besides the dealer that i can get the synchros. I figure that while im in there i will go ahead and replace all of them because it also grinds a little bit on a downshift from 6-5th. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

i would try changing your fluid first and if you don't know alot about tranny's i woiujld not try it yourself....becuse if you get in there and can't get it back together you will end up paying more to fix something u might have broke.....try a new tranny oil somehting synthetic and see if that takes care of ur prob it doesn't sound like a synchro jjust sort of like needs a new fluid exhange

I have thought about that before. I did put royal purple 75W90 gear oil in my tranny and differential just a year ago. I have only owned it since last june so i dont know how well the previous owner took care of it. It currently has just under 60k on it. I put about 26k on the car in the time i have owned it. I usually drive moderately but sometimes feel froggy and beat the hell out of it. Not sure how much this information will help but i thought i would put it out there. I will go ahead and put some new fluid in it this weekend and see how it does. thanks

Many of us, myself included, had grinding after using RP in our trannies. Switch to Redline MT-90 and your grinding will likely go away like mine did in the first 5 minutes after the switch.... been gone since.

looks like i should have read a few more threads before posting. I do have one question about that grind. Did it just grind for a split second or did it seem like the shifter refused to go into 2nd until it revved down to about 2500rpm? I suppose i can give redline a try. thanks for the advice.

ok i feel really bad. I was just at a little get together of car enthusiasts and there was a couple of younger(16-18years of age) guys running their mouth to each other. They finally decided to race each other, yes on the street. No i dont condone this but i was curious who would win so i followed behind. They raced from 30 mph until one of them gave up. When i went to leave and watch the race i couldnt get my car into reverse! It just wouldnt go no matter what i did. After i got it backed out, i followed the two younger guys to where they raced. This is a race between one of those new toyota corolla XLR's and a older mitsubishi eclipse. Both cars had some basic boltons. I was in second gear when they took off. I was surprised and really disappointed when i just stayed with them and couldnt really pull up on them. When we went back to the parking lot the mitsubishi(who lost by the way) started talking **** to me! This obviously pissed me off but just blew him off. He kept running his mouth and finally i just had to shut him up. NO I DIDNT RACE HIM! I scared him. I just told him i needed a minute to run to my place and get my little blue bottle. He decided he didnt want to race after all. Eventfull night. ok, im done venting.

^well reverse does not have a synchros so it is normally more difficult to get into gear. If you can get it into reverse just pull on the shifter and back out like normal, it will normally fall into place. BTW are you pushing down on the shifter while trying to put it into reverse?

And check your clutch pedal bracket.....it can cause the clutch to engage erratically and that can cause the shifting problem as well

Sorry man...can't catch them all

I liked Jeff's list the other day

A diagnostic routine goes like this:

1) cheap to expensive
2) easy to difficult
3) most likely to least likely
4) electrical to mechanical
