Switching transmissions...

Sorry if this is a repost, I searched. I Promise.

Any thoughts on switching my 8's AT to a 6speed? The parents bought me the AT but I wanted the manual... I'm wondering if it'd be practical to start saving and get it converted or just save up for a new car. Thanks.

Probably better to just trade it in. The AT motor is a different motor than the MT unless you have an '06

Where in Middlesex Country, NJ can you open up the car anyway? Driving above Monmouth sucks, maybe the AT is best for now. I used to live in Old Bridge and work in East Brunswick talk about traffic.

Yeah, driving stick in traffic gets tiresome fast. Especially Jersey traffic, those jughandles just pissed me off to no end.

i had an 04 auto and was thinking about doing the same thing. i finally broke down and traded the car in for an 06 MT last week. when i test drove it i couldnt believe the difference in power. the auto is still a great car and you should enjoy it and dont beat yourself up like i did about the auto. the swap would be an engine and transmission swap so it would be more cost effective to just get the MT in a trade in. i live in Staten Island so if you want to drive my car to see the difference thats fine with me.

Why do you want to switch to the MT? If it's for the greater control/fun, etc...you'll want to just trade in for the MT.

If it's for speed, there will be good FI solutions much faster than the stock MT, and you may end up spending as much as you lose trying to trade for an MT.

I'm in the same situation - parents bought it for me even though I wanted the MT. I figure the money I saved from not buying the car can be spent on making it fast enough for my liking.

That 'AT' engine does come with a 5 speed manual in all of the world but N. America.

but again, a MT 8 with Turbo would smoke an AT 8 with Turbo.

So if you want fun and speed, MT is the only way to go.

City driving is not an excuse.

Yeah and you're down $10-12k for the turbo and trade-in, might as well buy a car with real power potential if you're going to do that.

The only thing stopping someone from swapping transmissions is the CAN system. It talks to everything, and therefore must be convinced to work, and that's not going to happen without lots of time and money.
