If it was just the PLUGS that were inverted, but the Leading coil still had a plug wire to the plug in the leading position and the Trailing coil still had a plug wire to the plug in the trailing position, then no damage, just sub-optimal power and efficiency.

Crossing the wires is where things get risky, depending on what is swapped with what.

Easy way to remember:
T = Trailing and Top
L = Leading and Lower

Easier way to remember:
Look at the big L and T stamped on the housing

Correct, it's the plug wire order that is critical, as this determines which plug is actually firing when the ECU is firing a given coil.

it is possible to damage something--although unlikely--the leading plug is longer than the trailing. This means that the leading plug used in the trailing position may "bottom out" and if tighten too much--that could cause some distortion. Unlikely but possible.

The lengths are different, but the internal ability of them to pass power is identical (except how length of electrical path does slightly affect voltage drop)

Since the trailing plug hole ends with a smaller diameter than the plug, is anything other than the plug in danger of damage?

it's quite unlikely you're going to damage the trailing plug port inside the housing, even if you did manage to crank it down that far.

I was under the impression it could push out the housing and creating a ski jump for the apex seal if tightened down fully

I did one time connect the rear trailing for the front trailing, or something close to that. It didn't want to idle, and died right off, but once everything was connected it was fine.

I think you should be alright.....when i changed my plugs the previous owner had put two leading plugs in the front rotor and two trailing plugs in the rear rotor. I didn't know until i changed the plugs and really don't know how long they were that way. I just took it to the dealer last week for an oil change and a compression test. All my numbers where good and i have a healthy engine according to the tech.
