I had my 05 shinka at the stealership today for the msp-16 reflash, and while I was there, I test drove a 2008. I was happy to feel that my car is just as responsive and "tight" feeling as the 08.

Only difference was that shifting through the 08 gears seemed to take less effort, and/or was "easier". I t was almost as if I could "flick" the shifter through the gears.

Not that my gears are difficult to shift through, nor do I have any grinding, etc. Mine is just stiffer--almost as if it needs to be lubed somehow. I was just wondering if there are any known issues with these trannies/synchros becoming "stiffer" over time.

 

when is the last time you swapped out your gear oil, and what brand are you using?

 

Interesting.... i have thought the same before between my old 7 and my shinka... its been a lot of years since my 7, but it seems it was the same as you describe between the two?? So, I second this question. As far as I know, I'm running the stock oil in mine. 25000 miles here.

I just picked up the car on friday, and do not know if and when the gear oil has ever been changed. The car has 22,7xx miles on it.

What's involved with changing the gear oil and/or the bushing lube and reseat?? Are there any DIY's on these things?

 

the gist of what i was suggesting is this:

take apart your console, remove shifter, clean/remove/relube shifter bushing and receiver, reassemble.

there's a DIY on miata.net (i think) that is basically the same.

it may or may not help you.

 

I was actually able to obtain the warranty records for my car, which had the previous owners phone number. I gave hom a call, and he told me that the car was very well maintained at all times, and that he really only drove it occasionally--hence the relatively low miles for an 05 at 22,100 at purchase. That made me feel a little better. I may look into the DIY lube though...

 

i have a brand new 2008 rx8 transmission in my 2004 rx8...

the transmission felt a lot stiffer when changing gears till about 2,000 miles. Now it's easier to shift. It's not yet as nice as my old transmission with flicking it into gear, but I assume that will come as it breaks in more.

 

OMG! Stalker! I'm actually surprised that the dealership actually gave out info like that. Isn't that a major privacy issue?

 

^^LOL. It's funny because the records that the dealership faxed me has my address as the current owner, but has the previous owners name and number on it. I didn't expect to have that info included, but figured I may as well call the guy to find out if it was problematic for him at all.

After all, he might as well be honest to me--not like he has any liabilty to me had he beaten the **** out of it.

 

why not? I was planning on changing all my fluids when i get home. I thought everyone was going with the redline tranny and diff fluid. I have heard a few negatives about others but never redline what am I missing??

 

I have zero problems with Redline in my tranny. Why you say that Charles...

 

Are you the second owner or third owner perhaps? You might have a short throw shifter installed.
