seeking ECU info

I'm sorry if this has been brought up before, but I couldn't find anything relevant in the archives. I'm looking for some information on the factory ECU.

What model is it?
Does anyone offer a development kit for programming this unit?

I'm well aware of the CanZoomer and CanScan units, as well as the pass-thru programming feature of the SAE J2534 spec. However, as I understand it, communicating with the ECU in this manner requires knowledge below the CAN-level. I know there is a utility that will load a Mazda flash into the ECU. However, as I understand it, this image is upload to the ECU in an encrypted format. I'm really looking for a development kit that the ECU manufacturer would offer to its end users. Any ideas?

Does anyone know who actually manufactures the ECU? I'm looking for any information I can on the ECU. Thanks.

Racing Beat is the only company in the US that has first hand knowledge of how to alter the maps in the stock PCM/ECU. Are you a programmer wanting to write your own maps?

Nah, more just a a car and computer geek. I'm very interested in the CanScan tool and the fact that you can write other applications for it. But datalogging itself isn't much good for gaining performance unless you can adjust parameters of the car. I don't like the idea of a piggyback because it only lets you alter a few parameters, and there are other ECU functions (like throttle actuator) that come into play.

I know Racing Beat has connections, but if the ECU is really a true generic for Ford/Mazda/Volvo like I would expect, there have to be some other people programming it. Very interested in the potential for reprogramming the 8's ECU.

Someone on the Mazda 6 board claimed that their ECU is made by Visteon. Any idea if that's true?

Visteon making the ECU would make sense, since Ford buys most of their electronics from Visteon (Ford might even own Visteon.)

The actual hardware might be Visteon, but the flash files are Denso Corp

Does Denso sell an SDK for the ECU? What's a license cost?

If I'm not mistaken, the ECU run on "Hitachi Vehicle Operating System for SH-2 Operating System, Product Version V2.1A 1999" from the look of the flash binaries files I last checked. And the closet hardware reference I found is at: www.renesas.com, but If anyone one want to do some hacking I'm sure they would found a way if they have the resources; as these companies don't deal with us end users.
