my rx8 is making a screeching sound when i accelerate but when im in fourth gear it goes away i just had my cat. replaced does anyone know what this noise is

 

where is the noise coming from? engine bay? interior? wheels? trunk? etc.

does it happen when the engine isn't in gear? i.e. does it make noise when you blip the throttle in neutral.

Can you upload a video clip?

 

I had a similar problem when my oil was low, it would make a screeching sound from the engine bay when I would reverse out from my parking lot before the ECT was peaked. It would continually screech until I bliped my throttle in neutral, then it would go away.

How long since you've changed your oil?

 

thank you guys for replying yes i can upload a video i just gotta charge my camera, it sounds like its coming from the right side of the car i just had the cat replaced i read that it could be from the sheild that protects it but it gets louder when i speed up right when it revs around 4 rpm the engine sounds fine. i will upload video asap its sounds the louder in 1,2,3 gear

 

i havent changed my oil i got the car 3 months ago it runs fine its just that noise that gets tome but just recorded a video about to post..... i do put oil in it when i refuel tho

 

If you haven't changed the oil / filter at all I recommend you do that just as a measure of safety lol.

I don't know about you but I replace all of the wear and tear items / fluids as soon as I buy a used car. Better to be safe than sorry.

it's very hard to tell from that video what I'm listening to. You might want to get a second person with you to record it without it hitting everything in your car when you're driving. I wish I could help more with that sound file

 

I'm hearing more of a squeak than a screech unless I'm missing something

 

this is what the problem was thanks everyone for response an concern loving the rx8!!

 

that does not look like the stock cat, but it also sounds like the material inside has melted.

 

What was bs an ya its not the previous owner said he had. Just swapped it out before I bought the car but he lied!!
