that is a shift for economy light. The 86-88 RX-7 had that. I came on at 2600 or 4000 (dependent on throttle position) so that you would shift for best fuel economy

Don't the automatics have some kind of shift light or gear light for the tiptronic?

I haven't seen a shift light, but with the windows open and the moon roof open, you cant hear the beep, I hit 10K when I first got it didn't realize it for like 1/4 a second, pissed me off big time. Need a big *** shift light.

I will be doing this as soon as I get an FSM. From what I can tell, it should be pretty easy to hook up an LED or relay (to drive some kind of light) to the stock buzzer.

And for all the naysayers, how do you know when to shift?

I actually go by the sound of the engine. It's like knowing when/if you can downshift into 2nd or 3rd. It's easier to do, and it avoids you having to look down at your tach all the time, muchless for some dummy light. Learn your car by sound. There's nothing wrong with hearing the lovely symphony of a Rotary engine and memorizing it like a song.

OK, that I'll buy. Although, I doubt many people (myself included) would be able to totally avoid the cutoff (or shifting too soon) all the time.

I figured the response was going to be "just look at the tach".... The point of a shift light is so that one doesn't have to look down. It should be bright enough so that you can keep your eyes on the road.

Hey, even Formula 1 cars have shift lights

i was just curious about a shift light. the beep is cool til your open the windows. its weird going from a regular engine to a rotary. but i'm gettin pretty used to her. i've done a little driftin with her..(on the track ofcourse!!!)..and watchin the needle isnt too big of a deal. basically i love my rx8...shift light or not!

i could swear i had a shift light too.

right when i hear the beep i see a little round orange light up and to the right of the tach. i've only hit it a few times since i got my 04 in december, i've never actually been looking at it when it goes off, but it's definitely there.

im' going to check something, so i might edit this in a bit

btw my car is in the shop (see my NE post) so i can't hit the beep right now, but i'll check tht too

You can set it to whatever rpm you want.

Holy thread bump How did you wire it? Might be nice to have one that you can shut off. I would like to have one while spraying to keep my eyes on the track.

/\ If you have the AP or Pro Tuner and are FI , a good way to get a shift light/buzzer for the track is to use the redundant VFAD signal line or the VDI signal line . You can program either of those to come on at any rpm you like .

I bought a cheap shift light with a potensiometer to adjust the rpm.
It has 3 cables.Power, ground and signal.I took signal from the first ignition coil (green wire). Then i removed the bulb from the original shift light and replaced it with leds which i fitted inside the OEM speedometer.
