Thumbs up "Run the **** out of it." - to fix hard start.

I was told that by the head tech at a Mazdaspeed dealership after I told him I was having some hard start problems.

I told him that I take it up to redline a couple times a week and he told me that you really need to just run the crap out of it everyonce in awhile more so than just than just redlining it every now and then.

So I took his advice and ran the the car pretty damn hard, no dropping below about 6K RPM for about 5-6min strait and staying above 7K most of that time. (I also didn't break any traffic laws )

To my surprise the car start's SUPER easy now, just like new, I bump it to start for about 1-2seconds and the car whirls to life.

Just throught I would share, I know most people say to redline it everyonce in awhile, but I just wanted to add that some extended high RPM may actually help the car out some.

I've been having some occasional hard-start problems since gas stations in the area switched to the winter fuel formulation. This is a good theory; I will leave for work today after most of the traffic is gone, and give your MS guy's suggestion a thorough test.

I am suddenly looking forward to going to work.

Thanks for the tip!

This is where the standard phrase for running rotary engines came from.

"Drive it like ya stole it!"

if you don't baby your renesis (baby = redline) often, carbon can build up in the spark plug holes. heating the inside up nice and hot can burn that out of there and make cold starts a little easier.

jsut remember, a redline a day keeps the mechanic away!

I had been hitting the buzzer almost every other day, but that did not seem to be enough. I had to get the engine upto temp for a few minutes then just run the perverbial **** out of it, you need some EXTENDED high RPM usage, not just a couple seconds at redline.

I also noticed that after extended periods at redline, the car gets MUCH more smoother and powerful, especially in gears 1 and 2. It feels as good as clearing the mucus from your lungs! (ok don't picture that)

yeah, i noticed after driving the dragon (one run is about 20 minutes straight of +6k, and you foot either all the way in, or all the way out) a few times everything about the car just seemed to mesh much better. i dunno if it's placebo or what. i notice the same thing whenever i drive home from an autox.

she loves to be flogged, what can i say? lol

Soo, If mazda ever found out that I track my car and tried to cancel the warranty, I could just say I was clearing carbon deposits right

BTW, I did notice my 8 started and ran a lot smoother after a day at the track... 2 hours completely in between 5-9.5k definately was good for it!

Italian tuneup always does the trick for the cars. I run the **** out of my car every so often and I never have any problem with it. Yet, other people seem to baby their cars and they have tons of engine trouble. Cars are meant to be driven.. not to be babied..

can anyone chime in on why redlining your car for that long would be a bad idea?

Only if sitting in neutral and getting the RPMs up there.

Dumping gas.

Aftermarket exhaust with high flow cat driving through town at redline (can you picture that).

sometimes it feels like the car wants to be run hard. just the way that it feels. every motion and shift and turn just screams PUT YOUR FOOT TO THE FLOOR!!! So I have to comply. I reintroduce the pedal to the floor and I dont let up until about 120. then I let off. for the rest of the day and the next few, she runs nice and smooth in appreciation for the great drive. The RX-8 is like a good woman in that way.

and thus is the essence of life

A note of caution - make sure your engine is FULLY warmed up before performing "the Italian tuneup".

I have had a two stroke motorcycle (nsr250 MC21)where this was exactly the case...it struggled a little thru to redline the first time after warm up....then its sweet as, just like clearing its lungs.

I dont live at redline....but I visit often.
