Rough idle and vibrations
I want to ask you guys if any1 had this problem before ... when the car idles i get vibrations when the car is warmed up ... sometimes rpm drops sometimes the fan starts and it vibrates and sometimes i just hear a loud tick like a switch and vibrations all over the car and in the gear box . the motor mounts are perfect, I did all the tests at mazda (besides compresion) and they had a look at it and couldnt find the problem .. some say its the alternator and that it dose not make enough electricity to power everything and thats why it vibrates but i turned everything of besides the engine no effect same vibrations. help me out if you have any ideas about what it can be ... fuel maybe ? sparkplugs ?
Rotary engine will vibrate if the idle dips too low. but u should never have any vibration above 800 rpm.
if ur AC is on, it might be the compressor kicking and causing it to dip below 800 rpm.

mine has been doing this recently, mine started this way... now skips while trying to start, no power below 2k rpm (shudders some while trying to start off), still idles rough.. sometimes it'll drop and feel like it is going to cut off (around 6-700 rpm).. no cel though!
Afraid to take it to mazda, as i'm at 67k miles

Engine warranty has been extended 100K miles.
but be prepared ! those crooks @ dealership will try to hit you some bullshit with it. like "oh need to replace ur water pump, belts, coils, plugs, etc. total would be 1234 + tax ... " kind of ****.

+1.....vibration at high temperature while idling.....it's not steady thing..it just happens once in awhile whenever I idle at high temperature.......it dips low and starts to vibrate for about 2 to 3 sec and then it goes back up....
I took it to the dealer.....they said idle was ok...and replaced the engine mounts because there was bulletine recall....but did not fix the issue entirely. Seems to get better a bit.......I just learned to ignore it............no power lost yet thou.....still pulls as strong...

it shakes because the idle dip below 800. vibration will occur.
but if u drive around normally, keep it below 3000 rpm for 20 minutes or so. stop by the side and idle for 1 minute. if in that minute you see your rpm goes LOWER than 700rpm, you might have a bad engine.

Yeah seems to be a general issue i have the same thing you guys describe it dosent drop below 800 rpm and if i keep the revs up its super smooth pulls like crazy so i was guessing alternator or ecu lag

I experience this when it's hot outside and my cooling fans kick on. It's perfectly fine when the cooling fans are off.
With everything I've read I've accepted this as normal behavior for an 8.

Coils Dying
RE-post from another thread but relevant here too..........
I checked the coils in my 03-model today. A picture speak the thousand words in this case but needless to say I am now going to order a set from Online Mazda parts as suggested by "erx8" & bypass Mazda Australia's ripp off pricing.
Note:....... 1 coil appears better than the other 3, thats because l wiped it prior to taking the pics. (doh!)
The end pic shows my "short-term" solution until I can source new coils. May even make up a rubber mat under them to reduce the risk again in the future by reducing the "Negative potential". Can tell you all that the factory intake piping will be used (via another source once the Odula intake is purchased) to duct cool air over the coils for the sake of reliability.
The pitting on all 4 coils makes for an easy explanation of the slight mis-firing at idle. For reference. There is just 53k km on the clock.

for deathcraft : ur engine should be fine. but still u can do the test urself just for the hell of it, not like its going to hurt anything. right ? 
for ciobulus, if your coils have never been replaced. it might be a good idea to do it now. not like it cost a lot in the first place. about 110 bux will get u all 4 including shipping.

^ 3k rpm 20 mins test didn't work out well for me. Cuz i realized that it's really hard to keep it under 3k....even for 20 mins...LOL I felt pretty stupid....

I'll just have my dealer check it out again next time I go in for a routine maintainese... I still have power train warranty til 3/2009. so I'm not too worried.

mazda service wont do **** about it .. they are a bunch of ppl who got that job with no knowledge about the engine or the car ... most of the mazda owners know more about how the car works than the stupid mechanics . I asked them to look at it 10 times and they sayd its fine done dozens of tests for nothing but i'l change the ignition coils on a guess and if it works i'l trow a bunch of molotov cocktails in the dealership and do us all a favor
