Rotary reliablity
hey yalls this may be a lil noobie question but i m really interested in gettin an rx8. my cousin owns a FC and i noticed he had ALOT of major engine problems. he had to rebuild his engine like 7 times and like every 50k - 80 k miles..... i also heard for the later models, (the FD) also had alot of engine wearouts. so i was wondering if any of u ppl who actually owns the new rx 8 has come across similar problems with engines breaking down or apex seals coming off... or is the "RENESIS" engine revolutionary as mazda says it is? anyways thx for reading. ^^

FD engines can last 130K if properly cared for, and NA rotarys are more reliable than piston engines with the exception of diesels.
There are many threads relating to the topic, just a simple search will turn them up.
And yes, the engine is revolutionary...just give the aftermarket a few years to really sink their teeth into it.

50K-80K...what the hell was he doing to his cars?!?

7 rebuilds with 50-80k between rebuilds doesn't add up in my book.. I'd say your buddy was abusing the car.
I have 140k miles on my FC and it runs like a top (and is for sale...) - the motor has definately outlasted the paint(!)
There are also multiple threads on this around so a search for reliability should net you plenty of other comments too.

My 88 GXL 5-speed is closing in on 150k. The engine still loves to be rev'ed. Change the oil on a regular basis and the engine will just keep on purring.
buy the 8 .... I pick mine up in a couple of days.

A properly cared for NA rotary is nearly bulletproof. My FC was going on 16years and 170K miles of reliable everyday service. The engine runs strong to redline every time I ask it to.
I expect no less from the Renesis.

Your cousin must be driving a turbo charged FC. 7 rebulids???????? Odviously he doesn't know what the hell hes doing. If I were you, I would wait for an 05 model Rx8 as there should be some slight improvments.
