Are there resistor-less plugs for the RX8. I saw the threads on the pulstars and stuff but I am just looking for just normal RX-8 plugs but non-resistor type.

 

Resistor plugs are designed to work with the OE coils and wires, resistorless plugs would cause electrical noise to the sound system, but more importantly, to the sensor data to the ECU.

The RX-8 revs at 9k, firing the plugs four times per rev and the ECU would subsequently receive interference at 9kHz, 4.5kHz, 2250Hz and all the harmonics thereof.......

My guess is that the knock sensor would cut power at the very least - let me know if I'm right.

there is a reason why only NGK and Denso make RX-8 spark plugs.

 

I know about noise/emi and I am working on that. Do they exist? I not using the rx8 for the the first testing anyways, bike uses the same ignition setup and is cheaper to fix. Are the plug leads + or -(Yes I looked first)? Its for a DIY CDI if you want to know why I'm asking.

 

Plus if the EMI was that bad couldn't I just use a resistor of the same value as a OE plug in the lead since the CDI is feeding direct to the plug boot anyways, cause I'd have to splice 20 kilovolt diodes into the leads before the plug boot regardless.

 

Pretty sure the Iridium plugs we use only come 'resistor'.

I don't have any details on the polarity, nor the actual effects of the EMI - you'll be the pioneer......

Depends how redundant and 'hardened' the Renesas microcontroller program is.

 

Wouldn't splicing a resistor in the plug wires have the same effect as having resistored plugs?

 

The resistor would be solely to keep the OE Ignition and ECU happy. the CDI output with be tapped in after the resistor.

 

CDI units for our cars are useless regardless of whether its MSD or HKS because of the simple fact that the plugs have resistors in them which absorb alot of the energy. If we used non-resistor plugs, we would have a crap load of EMI like StealthTI mentioned. So what I am trying to do is setup a CDI that goes direct to the plugs skipping the whole OE ignition but instead of the ECU triggering the CDI, I want to use the OE ignition to trigger the initial spark and then the CDI will use the plasma channel created to discharge itself. Because its a capacitor with a direct connection to the plug, there shouldn't be any lag or additional spark duration. Then I would run a resistor and diode in the end of the wires before the CDI connection and also run a diode on each CDI line as well to stop the 30-40kV coils from discharging through the CDI box.

 

Word. Sounds like a good project. Seems like you know your stuff. It's been too long since I've dabbled in electronery to really know what you are talking about. But I know of the terms... Haha

 

Yeah, should work for sure, only thing stopping me from doing it is the plugs.

 

After talking to Charles and thinking about it last night, I have changed my mind.

After doing some math. I would be replacing the plugs alomost every 1-2k due to the power levels being feed to the plugs. The cost of that is way more then the fuel I would save and the potential power gains I would get. It just not cost-effective anymore. AP, BHR Coils and midpipe coming up
