replacement engine cost?

Forgive me for such a noob question.. I searched before hand..!

Anyway, I have a friend that came across an interesting deal on a 2005 RX-8. $4000 CDN. Guy claims its not wrecked in any way, BUT... no engine in it.
Well, red flags for me all over the place... sounds just wrong. He claims he took the engine out to put in another car, he liked it so much he wanted it in his other car (not sure what car it is but anyway..) who would do that, if anything.. you'd drop in a twin after removing the stock (or I would). It sounds sketchy.

My friend wants to know how much a new in the crate engine will cost. Dealer tells him $7000 installed. I can find rebuilt prices on the internet and in my area for RX-7 engines but nothing for an 8.. and he says he would really like a new one.

Anyone know?
Thanks for your expertise..

It can go as low as 2K for a reman one PLUS your core unit. but you dont have one. and that price is for the 4-port. but I think he might have some good shape 6-ports around .... do u know how many RX8 got rear ended out there ?

Does not include the install labor, of course.

You can post and ask one of our Forum Vendor, AKA Mazmart. Richard is a really nice guy, ask and he'll get back to ya very fast.

Man that is a weird deal. After you are able to get the 4000 CDN price plus the engine/install, ask the dealer how much a refurbished RX-8 is selling for. Here in houston I believe they still offer the standard warranty on their refurb's.

A dealer offered me a few refurbished rx-8's from the factory which I believe were in the 13-14k range.

there's no such thing as a refurbished RX-8 from the factory

you're dealer is mistaken, then engine you purchase from Mazda is stripped down, you will need all the stuff that bolts to it and probably many other parts too, the stripped down short block only is almost $5000 wholesale USD

you're only real recourse is the salvage yard

I also have another question pertaining to this car.. he wants me to come with him to look at it. He seems to figure since I've owned one since last summer I'm an expert (yikes!) and wants to know what I think.

There should be a way to reroute power so that we can see 'things' work.. ie controls and whatnot, correct? Obviously without an engine it cant be started, but what about stereo, moonroof, etc..? I am by no means a car expert, I figured I was doing well with basic maintenance and being able to change my own oil and plugs in my old car... I am really a rotary noob. Wiring?.. forget about it. Sorry if you're ramming your head into a desk reading this but I really just dont know.

The whole thing would have me running the other way, it just doesnt add up.. but he wants this car so bad he can taste it.

$4000 CDN for a rolling chassis? Sounds like a scam to me.

Get the VIN and do a carfax on it. Also I would get a dealer to tell you what it would cost to do an entire engine replacement including all ancillaries.

There's been cases of rx8 or rotary cars being stolen for their engines. I forget what the races are called but something along the lines of lightweight racing in which they thrive on the high hp light rotary engines. The car sounds like it's a victim of a chop shop and the chasis is no good with the vin numbers all over it. This is just my conspiracy theory, but it's been done before and the chasis may not be legit. A rolling rx8 chasis is worth more than 4k cdn.

As for if the car will "turn on" it should if the ecu is plugged in, but I'm sure it'll throw a whole bunch of codes without the engine being plugged in.

And get the vin checked out

My son paid $2200 plus about $300 shiping for a low mileage 6 port Renesis from Japan.

If the car is legit and as you said, I'll buy it if you don't.

Dude, I so totally agree... I'm glad there are others that feel that way....
4K? Its just insanely low. Either the thing is crumpled, or its hot....

Thanks guys. I feel better... and I'll tell him to run, knowing you all agree!

11 years alter, I doubt he'll answer. But look up RotaryResurrection, Pineapple Racing, Pettit Racing, Derwin Tuning. That's in North America. No idea about elsewhere.

Remember that those used engines from Japan are of unknown quality. They typically do not come with compression test results and many of the warranties have fine print that say "does not include rotary engines" or cover startup only. Many low-compression engines will start up just fine but make crap for power.
