Remote engine starter

Hey all,
I was reffered to you guys with this question. I've been reading a lot about specific startup procedures and "short-trip" procedures for the 8. They all have to do with proper techniques for allowing the engine to warm up fully. My question is, are there any problems with installing a remote engine starter. I don't always have the luxury of sitting around waiting for my car to warm up. These starters seem to work well on pistons, but are there any problems with them on rotaries. Thanks for any advice you guys have!!

mantisfile,

I posted this addition to the other thread, but don't know if you seen this.

Here is a thread on the RX7club forum. CLICK HERE. There are people there that are using one with their RX-7's. If it works on the "7", it would most likely work well with the "8".

I think the 8 has a chip in the key. You need that chip to start the engine. You can have the alarm installer wire the chip in the box or something. That what I did in my old Eclipse. I don't know if you should do that in your new 8.
Be careful if you like to park your car in gear.

I do not recommend the remote starter w/ chip key.

Against my better judgement I had one installed in my wife's 2002 Pathfinder. We used an installer recommended by our Nissan dealership. All was well for about a year, and then the electrical problems started. The main problem was the fuse that aloows juice to get to the chip-reader in the vehicle was blowing, so the reader cannot see the key, will not allow ignition to start.

I am sure this problem was actually quite trivial - but what was not trivial was convincing either Nissan OR the remote starter installer to investigate the problem. Each pointed the finger at the other ... eventually I leaned on Nissan and they removed the starter. All has been well since ... well, except for the $300 I wasted on the remote starter.

I wouldn't do it simply for the "specific short-trip procedure"...that's more if you're just going to be moving the car a couple feet to make sure you don't flood.

If you're actually driving the car, you should be fine on warming the engine up. You should even be perfectly fine in the cold winter just letting it idle for a couple seconds, and pulling off as you normally would - just keep the RPMs low until the engine reaches normal operating temp.

mantis,

I specifically asked a Mazda sales trainer about using a remote-starter with the car and he said it would be no problem at all. This is the first I've heard about there being a chip in the key. My mom's Pathfinder used to have a chip in it's key, but the chip was totally noticable. The RX-8 key doesn't have the a noticeable chip and I doubt that they were able to hide it under the grip part of the key.

Regardless, I plan on using CompuStar's 2WSS series (www.compustar.org). It also includes a paging system that alerts you if your alarm is triggered up to 2 miles away.
