can anyone out there explain the difference between synthetic and regular oil. I have heard taht the synthetic is much more expensive but better. y?

To answer the basic question, synthetic is supposed to be a cleaner better lubricating oil than mineral, thus the higher cost (R&D, marketing, etc).
