Radio / AC/Heat center console problem

my rx8 is having problems with the center console.

What is happening is that everything is lighted up and power is going through to it, but the radio is not displaying writing and is non responsive and the heat/ac controller can increase heat but nothing else can be changed.. when pressing the buttons there's no response it seems to be locked on the settings its on..

any ideas what the problem could be?

<= for no reason

No it came like that when I bought it. They took off 1000$ off the price of the car because of it. But the Mazda dealership I go to to get it serviced said they think they want to replace the whole console and it will cost 700 bucks! That seems a little high, is there an aftermarket part I can get that would replace the whole thing and make it work again?

I am going to guess then that the car you bought was used and that the person before you had an iPod adapter that they uninstalled and sold before returning the car. It is pretty common for the connetions on the back of the radio and controls to not be properly attached causing your condition. The other possibility is that the faceplate of your stereo has disconnected from the stereo itself disabling the buttons for the radio. To fix it you have to go through the process of pulling the radio, disconnect the 4 (I think) screws, and reattach them and not tighten them down too much. If that doesn't work there are two dash kits that you can buy to replace the headunit. One is made by CorkSport and the other is made by Metra. Either way you are going to end up in the same price range.
