Exclamation Quicker or Faster? Lets get some things straight here shall we!

Okay boys and girls lets get some facts straight. Alot of folks are saying the MT is FASTER than the AT etal.....yada yada yada....

The terms Faster and quicker are two different things.

The AT is just as fast as the MT because both cars will attain the same velocity or top speed. This is set by the ECU. The MT is quicker because there is no torque converter and the speed of the upshifts will be dependant on the abilities of the driver. The MT will shift marginaly quicker because it is not dependant on an ECU to set the shift points.

The term "Fast" or "Faster" is a measurement of velocity.

The term "Quick' or "Quicker" is a measurement of time or the amount of time the car takes to attain a desired velocity.

A car can be quicker off the line but may not be faster. My VW Passat W8 was quicker off the line than the RX-8 because of the AWD and 270 HP V8 but was not faster because it was electronicly governed at 130mph. We know the RX-8 is faster because some drivers have had their ride over 140mph.

You're right but what is the point? I have read numerous posts here on 1/4 mile, 0-60, this or that dyno measurement etc.

I don't get in my car everyday measuring it or myself by others cars. If I could get on a track I would but in the world I live in, it is about keeping as close to the law as possible and still explore the limits of the car (which is basically impossible) and just enjoying the ride.

Please forgive my brief rant but I am just tiring from the blah blah blah on speed of the 8 vs. _________ <fill in the blanks>. I know you were just trying to educate/inform or put context on things. For those of us who may never put the car on the track, does it matter how fast it is versus any other car? I think it is great that people can buy EVOs or WRXs that look like nice Hyundais and go really fast, I can even appreciate the technology put in those cars, but I couldn't care less how fast or quick they are. I like the 8 and that is why I bought it.

End of rant -- I'm not arguing with your point just building on it.

I agree

It's like apples and oranges.

I was just pointing out the differences to people who like to say one thing when they really mean another. I was getting tired of hearing a person say that his car is faster because it beat someone at a stoplight drag! When they really mean that their car was quicker!

Kinda like clearing the air so to speak!

The MT is not speed limited or gear limited. It is power limited. With that in mind, the MT is both faster and quicker. Just a correction.

Rotary Nut,

I am not a car guru but the MT has 41 more hp. Shouldn't that make the MT faster than the AT?

I have been told by more than one source that both cars have the same top speed limiter but the ECU governs the rpms at different levels for the MT and the AT. More horsepower does not necessarily equate to faster top speed. That is dependant on ECU limitations (governing) RPM's and your gear ratios in both the tranny and final drive.

As I mentioned earlier, the MT does not have any speed governors. It is simply drag and power limited. It is both faster and quicker than the AT.
