Quality of Mazda Plates

This is a plate pulled out of a renesis with 5,000 KMs on the motor.

Notice the chatter marks on the plates (horizontal lines), imagine trying to get a perfect seal on that.

Combined with the miss sized side seals you can see why so many renesis has issues with their side seals.

If you take the time to look @ the condition of shady's platees and 9krpm's plates you can see very familiar markings on those plates too.

Now throwing a question out there for people that have rebuilt their motors, what sort of quality were your plates? used or new?

Regards
Jason

Well if you want the prequel to that story as well... ill elaborate a bit...

Ive had 2 Rx8's.. First one was a AT and had 3 engines as well. The car was a hand me down (cant complain lol) but because of it being a hand me down it had carbon built up, thus causing my first engine failure. The other 2 engines were assembled horribly when Mazda outsourced the engine rebuilds before opening up the new reman plant in Virgina.

2nd/current Rx8 is a MT. As far as the engines go, I suppose what happened with my first 8 is exactly what happened with the first motor from this car, but I could be wrong. This is the 3rd engine and ive got a ton of mods to make it more reliable (Cobb AP w/ MM tune, Premix, BHR Ignition, Royal Purple oil etc.) so we will see how this engine goes. But we all know Mazda's remans are like Pandora's box of parts, noone knows what they will get.

A properly built engine should net you around 210-220hp w/out porting done, clean up the ports and Brian Cain has put down a 233whp Renesis I believe? Considering most Mazda factory 8's dyno around 180-190hp thats a modest ~30hp bump just from properly putting the engine together... I will go to Brain Cain from BDC for my build. Im just lucky he lives closer than an hour from where I live...

EDIT: Correction

My 2nd engine went FUBAR apparently... I was driving it on the highway, it bogged and died... Dealer said I had no Apex seals on rotor 1, 0 compression, and that it was from "water entering my aftermarket intake (AEM, same as Mazdaspeed unit)", despite the fact that it hadnt rained in the last 2 weeks and when it stalled/died it was a bright sunny day, Homecoming actually and I had just washed the car to pick up my date when it died LOL.... but yea so that caused engine to "hydrolock". Mazda denied my engine warranty and I argued with Mazda for a month, called Charles Hill from BHR, got some advice from him and finally won my case...

damn, thats nasty.

Well in all honesty, the quality of parts coming from Japan is not helping the situation with remans either.

E.G that plate, side seals that actually dont seal against the corner seals properly, causing eventual carbon buildup under your side seals and destroying your springs. If there is that gap against the corner seal, from a new FACTORY part, god knows how reliable remans will be.
