Price for mount and balance = $120??? Opinions please.

Dealer just called and quoted me a price of 120 dollars for mount and balance of four new tires. He explained that the high cost was due to the tire pressure sensors needing to be reprogrammed and the extra care and steps needed due to the pressure sensors.

Has anyone had this performed??

By the way, this was his second price quote. Originally quoted 49.99 for all tires, but then called back later with the new price.

Sounds a little steep to me.

Thanks

$120 each? or $120 for all 4. $120 for all 4 sounds fair to me

True! I only paid $72 dollars and unless they are installing NEW sensors there is no need to reprogram the damn things as they have already been registered with the receiver. Tell him to just mount and balance the tires and you can do the reprogamming as the procedures are outlined in the owners manual.

That's not bad from a dealer- my local dealer quoted me $200 to mount and balance the snow tires. Claimed it was because of 18" wheels and tire pressure sensors... I told him "whatever, and buh bye". I found a place that claimed they would do it for $60, but they weren't to sure what tire pressure sensors were... so I moved on. Finally, I called up NTB and they did it for $100 for all four- they told me it was a little higher because of the extra time it takes to remove the sensor before the dismount, and re-install it before the the new tire goes on. They really did take a while to do it right, so I didn't mind... and I got lifetime balancing, so my next winter->summer swap should be about $50.

I paid a Mazda dealer $100 to have four new tires mounted on new wheels. I'm guessing that you have tires on your wheels already, so that's an extra step to remove the old tires. $120 to a Mazda dealer for your work sounds fair to me.

Ok, so I take my car in to get the new tires put on (S-03 Pole Position 225/45/18) and the desk clerk asks the service guy what exactly is involved with the tire sensor reprogramming. He states that they have to hook 'the computer' up to my car in order to reprogram the sensors for the new signal. ???

I told him "That is not the way I read it in the owners manual, but I guess you would know more about it than me, right?"

Anyway, they call me later in the afternoon to tell me my car is finished and the total is $60.01.

This was the price they quoted me in the first place, plus tire disposal and wheel weights were an extra 10 dollars.

Turns out they didn't have to hook it up to the computer after all!! Well huh?? Seems the sensors didn't lose their signal so they didn't have to be reprogrammed after all. Lucky me.

To sum it up, four new tires mounted and balanced with wheel weights and tire disposal at a Mazda dealership = $60.01.

Love the tires. They have a better treadwear and performance rating for the same price as stock.

The S03's are fabulous tires. I got them as replacements for my Michelin sports, and they were far better.

I could not get my car to hydroplane on water, no matter what I hit. They channel water amazingly, and driving on wet pavement is just as solid as dry.

They grip phenomenally. My only complain would be tread wear is slightly over-rated at tirerack. After a year and only 11000 miles, with a single tire rotation, I was showing moderate wear. By moderate wear, I mean I would estimate 30-40% of the tire's life was gone.

I think they're good for 15-20k miles, at most, with any kind of sporty driving (excluding anything obvious like DSC-disabled burnouts).

Great choice in tires.

If anyone is in NY near the queens area... Make sure to check out College Point (right by shea stadium) all the car shops are around there... Some guys will do it for like 8-10 bucks a tire... Hell you can buy brand new tires for 20 bucks in some cases... its an interesting place to say the least...

Might be a great deal, but I doubt I would want an $8/tire guy working on expensive 18" rims with tire pressure sensors.

Seems expensive to me, although if it's for all 4 wheels, it's probably ok.

My dealer did it for $15 a tire. When I came to pick it up, the tech told me it was a first time, and the 18" wheels gave him a hard time. BTW, he forgot to mark which wheels the original tires -- he was installing the snows -- came from, which makes rotation a guessing game. Maybe that's an unusual error, but it couldn't hurt to mention beforehand that you want the location marked on each tire.

That seems excessive to me. I have had many sets of tires mounted and balanced on 15-17" wheels for $50 total for a set of four. I've had 30 series 18"ers mounted for free with a wheel purchase and $60 to remount and balance the same tires trackside after I got dirt and grass lodged in the bead from a little off-road adventure.
