Power Steering Loss :(

Well,
Chalk another person up for the power steering light coming on this morning.
I was just on an easy onramp and then looked down at the gauges and the power steering light (yes the one with the steering wheel and exclamation mark) was on.
So no electrical assist.
So I pulled into a parking lot after getting off the hwy and then did a shutdown and restart. All is back to normal after the reset.

Just curious if I should just note the problem and put the car in if it happens again, or put the car in now and see if they are able to find it.

Does the steering light throw a code that they can pull?
(I think it does, but want to make sure)

You said you continued driving after noticing the light was on.....did you in fact lose power steering, was the steering heavy? The light can come on for certain failures which do not result in loss of power assistance. If you had previously disconnected the battery for example, the light will illuminate to advise you to perform a reset of the neutral setting.

The fault is stored in non-volatile memory, even removing the battery will not clear it.

Gomez.

sometimes electric steering systems will get an error etc., shutting down and restarting resets the system if there is no terminal issue, happens on them all from time to time.

As long as it doesn't keep coming back you should be OK

Yeah, the steering at hwy speed was heavier. Not bad but heavier. Turning into the parking lot took a lot of effort to move those 18's around.

Gomez: I'm aware of the flashing and light on for a disconnected battery as I store my car every winter. Thanks for the verification on the stored code in the system. I thought it did, but wasn't 100% sure.

TeamRx8: I'm going to drive it until I pick up a can-scan or Hymee's new tool when it comes out to pull the code. If it comes on again, she's going to the dealer to get checked out.

Thanks for the help guys!

I had this type of power steering problem also. The dealer checked it out and found that the electrical connector to the power steering pump was loose. They just disconnected/reconnected and verified a tight connection. Haven't seen the problem again in over 8 months.

my power steering module was replaced completely a few months ago, when I came out to my car after having rented a movie, the light was on and no amount of restarting could get it to go away and biring my PS back.

Thanks for the insight. I'm going to check out my electrical connection this weekend and make sure it's tight.
If the light comes back on again, I'll bring her to the dealer. (unless I have a code scanner by then )
