Power steering as and independant system?

I have a project car in my shop that no longer uses the stock ECU to control the motor. Is it possible to run the power steering without the engine ecu? I am under the impression that the PS control unit being on the CAN bus would not work if it looses communication with the ECU. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Bit of follow up, testing on my way home. I drive a RX8 on the street also.. Anyway the power steering on the RX8 will continue to work with the engine stopped and the car not moving. So we can conclude that the system is not dependent on a RPM or speed signal via the CAN bus. I'll do some more testing tomorrow and isolate the PS harness from the rest of the crap.

Keep us updated. I'd like to use an RX8 rack in my next project car so I don't have to use a power steering pump. I have a '55 GMC 302 six cylinder hot rod motor I want to build a body for.
