Blackstone Used Oil Analysis

Just got the analysis back from Blackstone. My first time doing anything like this for any car, but, hey, I'm a total geek, so to me this is kewl stuff...

From the report, sounds like the engine has broken in extremely well. Actually, I was surprised to see iron ppm as low as it is. Most of the UOAs I've seen for the Renesis have had higher iron ppm (perhaps indicating wear). But then again, all the engines are pretty new. We'll see how the next UOA comes out at 10k miles.

BTW, kudos to the Purolator PureOne PL14612 for superior filtration! :D

Ciao!
Darren

EDIT: I've posted the analysis in a separate post, below -- d

Good point, Cam. I realized that after the fact.

Here's and abbreviated textual version I wrote up for theoildrop.com forums:

- Motorcraft 5W20 "synth blend" APISL/ILSAC GF3
- 2680 miles on oil, in service for 3 months
- 4qt oil change at last interval
- Total system capacity 7qt
- No oil added during interval
- Purolator PureOne PL14612 oil filter, same service interval as the oil
- Stock, original air filter
- Vehicle, Engine: 2004 Mazda RX8, 1.3L Rotary 13B-MSP Renesis
- 7880 total miles on vehicle
- Spirited driving -- not hard, but occasional redlines, shift points normally <4k RPMs for "around town driving"
- Climate: average Mid Atlantic Summer driving - highs in the 80s
- No recent mechanical work
- Sample Date 18 Sep 04

Blackstone Assessment:
DARREN: We typically expect to find high wear and silicon in new engines such as yours, but your wear and silicon are already below average levels. This looks like it's going to be a nice engine for you. Insolubles -- oil oxidation due to heat, use and blow-by -- were normal at 0.2%, showing good oil filtration and complete combustion. Silicon was okay at 15 ppm, showing no problems at the air filtration/induction system. The TBN read 4.9, so the oil still contains some active additive. No contaminants were present in the oil. Looks good! Check back to establish wear trends.

Khoney,
As I read this, you ran 7k between oil change and still had okay UOA results, right?. How much oil did you add between changes?

Thanks for sharing. Good to see some higher-mileage results.

New UOA Coming Up

I haven't done a UOA in a while, but will be getting one after I perform an oil change tomorrow. Will post it here when I get it back from Blackstone.

There's a MAKE_UP OIL ADDED box at the top of the form, in case you see more of these. I added about 1.5qts.

Good to see an analysis on a different synthetic. Overall the wear numbers look very good for such a long OCI.

Its interesting that Blackstone flagged the iron as being high. On a ppm per/1000 mi basis the iron wear is fine. Something that has been pointed out at BITOG is that because an oil change is only partial you start the interval with residual wear metals from the left over oil. The key thing is that it is easier to establish a baseline if you always run the same length OCI.

Both of these analyses show fairly low viscosity which is my ongoing concern with this engine, but the Royal Purple held up well if this is 5W-20 oil. The low viscosity in my opinion is probably due to a combination of fuel dilution and shear. I've been running 10W-30 oil and the viscosity still tends to be below the 30 weight range. In all honesty though the thicker oil has not seemed to significantly affect wear metals.

here you go, as promised, my most recent UOA (performed July 2005), which includes 200 miles worth of track time at VIR :o

these numbers basically tell me 3000 miles is as far as I'll tolerate for OCI, the way I use the car really shows its toll in the UOA

Here are a couple of UOAs. One at 1700 mile interval with Castrol GTX 5W-20, and one at 2800 mile interval using Penzoil 5W-20.

Here's my 1st UOA for the pile. They found presence of Nickel to be unusual. Wonder where in a Renesis Nickel might come from? I don't think I dropped any change down the filler Maybe the Fumoto Valve?

Edit - some additional info,

Most of the miles were from commutes, and a good deal of stop & go traffic -- maybe accounts for the bit of fuel dilution. Also a couple of hours of "spirited driving" - not track level but had a good run and kept the revs in the power band. The Nickel is still bugging me. The Fumoto valve does have brass and stainless-steel construction and Nickel is a significant alloy of some stainless steels. Next change I will wait longer for the oil to flow out before taking my sample, to flush any traces introduced by opening and closing the valve during oil drains. Will also ask Blackstone if they have any data regarding Fumoto valves, as they are commonly used in fleets exactly for the purpose of facilitating periodic oil analysis.

i'll do one on the next oil change, which should be sometime in late December. I now use Castrol GTX 5w20 instead of Motorcraft

Here's mine. Nickel too??

Nothing unusual in the engine (wrt earlier poster w/ nickel,
no fumoto valves or anything here). First UOA, but vehicle had strict racing-beat break-in, a couple of earlier oil changes. No track use, fairly easy life.
Mobil 1 mostly, though between this change and the last I used a quart of redline to top-off.

ajg, that is interesting that you're using Mobil1 and also seeing nickel. I wonder if there's a trace of nickel in the Mobil1 formula or (worries) some unusual wear regime with this oil. If my next analysis doesn't show a dropoff here I may switch to Royal Purple. Also odd that yours shows "normal" for Boron. Mobil1 has a higher than usual Boron (supposed to increase the effectiveness of the Moly)

edit - found virgin oil analysis shows no nickel.

Seems to me that most oils lose viscosity bellow the required grade... maybe a good idea is to run W30 or even W40 instead of the W20 (cause gas milage is bad anyway, so at least we keep the engines happier :o) )

I know I'm responding to a 3 month old post but I don't se why you want to go away from the Havoline and back to the Motorcraft. The Havoline has much higher levels of molybdenum but not an unreasonable amount. Moly is a prime friction reducing agent and the only ting that makes Idemitsu stand out from any other oils. I've seen a UOA on Idemitsu. The Moly level was around 1200!!! Admittedly Moly is a substance that can fall out of suspension but as with anything, it only happens with higher amounts. There comes a point where the oil just can't hold anymore for a long period of time. To me it looks like the Havoline is a tougher oil based on it's flash point and has better lubricating properties than the Motorcraft. Havoline has always been my favorite conventional oil and this shows why.

So any valid input on the viscosity level? I will do a blackstone now to check. I bought the car used and put about 3k in a month and a half (mostly highway with the occasional stop and go if there is an accident). I have always used Mobil 1 in my cars ( my last civic had 240k and does not burn a drop of oil). My car was dealer serviced so up until now it has had mazda oil I guess. BTW, I change oil religiously at 3k regardless.

UOA on Castrol Syntec Blend 10W-30

The attached file shows the results of my most recent oil analysis. All of these samples were run on Castrol Syntec Blend 10W-30.

My RX-8 is a '04 MT.

Obviously, I don't put a lot of miles on the car. I use it to commute to work which is only about 8 miles away. Samples taken in the winter show fuel dilution and somewhat lower viscosity, and samples taken in the summer like this one do not.

I was running 4000 mile intervals, but have dropped back to 2000 mile intervals. When I ran 4000 mile intervals, I pulled samples after 2000 miles for analysis using a sample pump (samples on 8/19/05 and 2/12/05).

Overall, wear metals have been fairly consistent throughout.
