Please help - engine light is on - intake valve:

Hello, I'm really hoping you guys can help me.

I had my car outside (but plugged in) overnight in Winnipeg (-30 Celcius) and in the am drove with no issue to underground parking (for 3 hours). When I started the car, the engine light came on and upon inspection by a Mazda dealer, he said the intake valve was open due to the cold weather and moving between outdoor and indoor parking (the value got unstuck or something). He cleared the code and I then drove for 5 minutes when the engine light re-appeared.

I don't have extended warranty and he said it would be a costly repair to rip apart the manifold to inspect. In the meantime, he said to keep the car in heated underground parking until I move to Vancouver in 2 weeks. What do you guys think? He said that I will burn more fuel while the light is on - I can live with that.

Normally it never spends the night outside in Winnipeg so this must be the cause. A very big thank you for advice! David

Sometimes high RPM driving can fix this. You will need to find a area were you can safely drive up / down the RPM so the 2nd and 3rd sets of injectors open up a few times. Its cheaper than the dealership.

yeah usually carbon gets lodged in that valve and will not let it move....either try some seafoam or a nice hard run like EXPO said

Agree: running it hard for a bit, and/or Seafoam treatment will probably take care of it. Also, if you want to inspect, it's not overwhelmingly difficult to take the manifold apart yourself, you could probably do so and re-assemble in 1-2 hours.

Well, they just charged me a $122 diagnostic fee to confirm the issue P2070/SSV. On top of that is the $550 fee for the following:

"Confirmed check engine light to be on / SSolenoid stuck open - brought car in shop and hooked up scan tool. retrieved code P2070/SSV Solenoid stuck open inspected SSV Solenoid and confirmed it to be stuck open. After reading service bulletin, found a modified SSV Solenoid and intake cleaning procedure. Parts are on order".

All of this for 1 night outside in Winnipeg (plugged in).

I'm writing a letter to the head of Mazda Canada - Don Romano to arrive at a solution as this part is not covered by warranty. I'm not impressed. A 2005 Mazda RX8 with only 21,500km (14k miles).

So they are saying it was just a bad solenoid?
Could have gotten a solenoid cheap from somebody here (especially if they have a spare VFAD solenoid from an intake swap since its the same thing).
But hopefully this take care of it.
Keep us informed.

Hello, just a thank you to everyone who helped me solve this problem with my RX8(P2070 issue). Greatly appreciated!

I used a bottle of Redline S1 and also ran the engine to 7k rpms several times on Saturday and kept the car indoors - heated parking. After starting the engine today - no engine light! Very, very happy. Fingers crossed.

It looks like I may have saved a $650 plus repair bill (dealer said to replace the Solenoid (sp)).

That stupid solenoid is only worth about $20...I suppose they make you replace the whole UIM to replace one of them
