How is it removed, and where can I get a good deal on a OEM clutch (clutch disc, pressure plate, throwout bearing, and the piolt bearing)

unless u have tons of time, u should get Mazda's tool.

removal tool cost like 100 something bux, the install tool I forgot, Its a special order item so, dont expect to get them in a week (I got mine in like 2 weeks)

pilot bearing itself is couple bucks, for OE clutch & pp, u can look at finishlineperformance or onlinemazdaparts . Both has dot com at the end

 

If you screw up not using the tool, you can gouge or scratch the surface causing a leak

My son had a blind bearing remover tool he got at Harbor Freight for about $40. It worked great on the pilot bearing on the RX7.

 

you can rent the puller and installer at auto zone or your local parts store. When you bring it back you get all your money back. I just did this about a mth ago.

Btw you'll need an extremly large rare and expensive socket to get the fly wheel off (if your going to change it) and you'll never get it off by yourself. It took three guys and some heat to get mine off

 

The puller I rent from autozone wont even go into the pilot bearing. So I got the Mazda tool. Its collecting dust now but it did make the pilot bearing removal 10000 times easier (like 10 seconds)

The Socket cost like 50 bux new. the shop used the socket to remove the nut via impact. then they use a big *** Torque Wrench to secure it

 

HUMM? the one I got worked like a champ. It was a strangly over sized looking tool for the job but 3 whacks later and the bearing came out.

BTW: 5W20 deffinatly CUTS it!!! the rotor, housing, seals, and everything else inside the motor

 

is this like a normal pilot bearing on most cars? if so, there is an old school trick i know of that will work.

squeeze some grease into the center of the pilot bearing. then using the clutch alignment tool, insert into the pilot bear and tap the alignment tool with a hammer. you may have to squeeze more grease in as you tap. the bearing will eventually work itself out since the grease doesn't compress behind it.

 

I rented the autozone puller, and yes it did not fit, but we grinded down the inside edge of the 2 arms until it did ( didn't take much effort or material removal) then we simply through some black paint I had left over from my rims- returned it,got my money back and voilą worked like a charm

 

i bought the oem puller from mazdatrix and have been using it for quite some time with excellent results. i've pulled over 20 pilot bearings with it and it takes literally seconds for the pilot bearing to be removed from the eccentric shaft. i would never waste my time with other pullers after using this tool.

the pilot bearing is removed using this puller. once the puller is inserted into the e-shaft and through the pilot bearing, you simply thread the tool clockwise until the fingers expand and the tool is tight in the pilot bearing's well. then it works like a slide hammer. two or three pulls and its out.
