I believe you should see 2 lines with 3 dots in between them. Try to keep the oil level between the top dot and top line

Would I still get this out of warranty?

Umm... do you really need an "F" and "L"? The upper mark is "Full". The lower mark is "Low". The distance between the 2 is about 1.8 Quarts. At least this much is in the owners manual.

So, you have the older style without dots? No I don't think they will give you a new one. The bulletin was just to inform the technicians on how to interpret the gradations on what was a "new" style dipstick.

The dots do make it a bit easier to estimate the amount of oil needed to top off, since the range from F to L is non-linear.

You can "calibrate" your old dipstick if you'd like. I did mine....

Or, I'm sure Mazda will be happy to sell you a new one, with the dots.

If you have an AT, it's on the left side of the intake manifold. It's Black .

don't need an F or an L. just use the dots on there to measure the oil level

The top dot usually means full.

Yeah - you've got an '04, before the new stick. You can add marks, like Nubo described. Or you can buy the new style stick for something like $10 to $15.

Or you can just look at the lines and figure it out, it's not that hard.

on a side note, I did my oil change last night, I usally buy the Castro GTX and take it to a shop to change the oil for me since is right next to my job. So I changed the oil and in the manual it states 3.7 Qrts. I put in 4.5 Qrts and after driving to work about 35 miles I get an oil light, I was like WTH. So I added another half qrt in. I did jack up the car from the left and then the right and had it flat for like 20 minutes, and im also using the bigger Mobil 1 1010 filter. Is this normal?

Either your keyboard is missing an L or this is a brand of oil I have never heard of.

Could you be more specific about this weirdness you are getting at? You still haven't gotten there.

You don't say whether you checked the dipstick at any point in this or if you did, what was the reading? The amount drained can increase if you jack up one side, which sounds like you did. And also the larger oil filter will of course take more oil. So I'd say that the 5 quarts you used sounds reasonable given your circumstances. When changing, it's a good idea to top off, start the car briefly to check for leaks, then shut down and take another reading and top off again. This will take care of the amount captured by the filter, instead of driving around and getting the oil light. Not quite as big a deal with the tiny OEM filter

Thats the thing when I look at the dipstick its wet all over not giving me a right reading. Weird in the way it goes on, I have to twist and turn for it to go in right, maybe is just me.

The dipstick does have to bend a little because access to the location is tight; mine's taken on a slight permanent bend. And does take a little getting used to seating it fully in the tube so that the rubber/plastic bit gets seated home. Less a matter of twisting than of moving the handle a bit to find center.

It's a little easier to get a reading if you wipe it down first and then check again. The revised dipstick, in addition to the extra marks, is a little thinner. Don't know if that helps. My old-style dipstick got a lot easier to read when I sanded off that brown (paint? anodizing?). Heck of a lot more contrast between amber oil and silver, than amber oil and *amber* paint! Just make sure to finish sanding sand cross-wise, not lengthwise.

Contrast is your friend:
