Do you plan to make a supercharger kit for the street? after you get if put together for racing.

Street supercharger kit

Only if we can be ABSOLUTELY sure that the customer will not hurt their motor. Most stock motors with aftermarket boost kits don't live long. We don't want to be in that business. We'll have to see how the engine holds up, and what can be done with the stock ECU.

Right now we are quite interested in the suspension. Mazda has done a tremendous job, but their priorities are different from ours. Our goal is to increase the handling without destroying the ride quality, and traction over rough surfaces.

Anyone interested in an attractive 3 piece wheel in stock dimensions? We are currently prototyping wider than stock wheels.

Wakeech...I responded to your post, but it never showed up. I'll try again if I get some free time. (Responses to your posts are never quick!) How 'bout asking some stupid questions? They're easier to answer!

heh heh, if you say so...

what colour's the car gonna be?? i s'pose that'll be sponsor-dependant, so on that note, who've you got lined up?? is Mazda offering factory money/tech assistance??

For me, it would come down to weight, price, and looks (in that order). Minimizing unsprung weight (and weight in general) is always a big goal of mine.

Paul's email to me...

Paul (as i'm sure everyone was) having difficulty with the server, and just got too frustrated to continue trying to post his replies to me, so he mailed them, and i'ma post 'em up here for all to see... incase you're interested.... which you should be, i mean, if you're here reading this

Originally from yawpower's mail to wakeech
Hey there,

I have responded to your questions twice, and both times got a "cannot find server" message when I tried to post. When I tried to go back to my post it was gone. Anyway, I got tired of ******* with it. Here it is direct. If you want to post the answers go ahead. (Assuming that your luck is better than mine.)

now, about those stock ports: will you be utilising the tertiary ports, or will you use only four?? oh, and on that note, what're the port timing degrees like?? similar to the 13B with 32* ATDC open and 80* ABDC close, or is the cycle earlier?? those secondary ports look wickedly big, and have a funny shape to them: do you have any idea why, or how that would affect intake operation??

We will be using all the ports, but the opening points will likely be different. A supercharged motor requires less intake duration for a given operating range, and so it will take some time on the dyno to find the optimum crossover points.

The funny shape probably has to do with mixture conditioning. The gas, and air follow different paths through the intake system, and Mazda is probably trying to get a nice homogenous mixture for the sake of combustion stability.

and the rotors, are the rule-makers saying anything about clipping the corners to change timing/introduce a minute amount of overlap?? i was just thinking that it might work into the clearancing...

The sides of the rotors are already clipped a bit to delay intake closing. They will not allow any modifications of that type.
how about manifolds?? the intake side is already pretty awesome: will you be incorperating some of the stock features (like the multi-runner system) into your supercharging system?? and how about the expiration side?? in the stock mounting location, will you be able to work around a multi (3?? 4??) runner, tuned length manifold??

We intend to use what exists with the exception of the plastic upper half. That plastic is just fine for a naturally aspirated engine, but i'm concerned that the combination of boost and heat may cause problems. I intend to present it to SCCA as a safety issue, and build a new upper piece.

how will you work around the weirdness of the siamesed intermediate out-hole??

It will be a 3 pipe header system. Trying to separate it into 4 is impractical, and I suspect it would not flow well anyway. Only the flowbench and dyno will tell for sure.

what would be the benefit of staying with the collector-log manifold, other than the space issue??

It is a distinct disadvantage. It is heavy, and the flow paths are less than optimum. We will test with it though to better understand street applications.
speaking of mounting points, will you be keeping with the stock suspension mounting points and components??

The stock pickup points may be moved 1". Additional bracing is allowed, and rod ends will be used. As I said before, SCCA is very accomodating, especially on safety issues. The Speed World Challenge is really the last bit of real racing for manufacturers to showcase their cars. They're doing a great job.

The rules, and vehicle technical specifications are posted on the Speed World Challenge website.

For your amusement, check out the picture on the front page of our website. We are having T-Shirts made with some really cool artwork. I think you'll get a kick out of it.

Also, we are about 2 weeks away from having our first prototype 3 piece wheel. All the CAD drawings, and stress analysis are done. We have the rim shell prototypes in hand, and we just have to machine the center section once the prototype forging arrives. After that we send it off for SFI 3.5A fatigue testing (They are going to destroy our first wheel! It just doesn't seem right!) and away we go. The 18" X 8" 40mm. offset will be first, and the 18" X 9.5" will follow as soon as the fatigue testing can be completed.

Anyone who purchases an 18" X 8" wheel can run it with stock tires, and when they finally wear out, they can step up to the wider wheel and tires just by changing the inner rim sheel at a cost of $100.00 each. I hope this is a good idea! Your input is certainly welcome.

Oh yeah, "What color will the car be?" I probably do not get to make that decision. Sponsors have a way of getting exactly what they want.

PY
there you have it.
i'll be cookin' up another batch of q's for our most awesomest friend Paul here, maybe today.

I don't know what the rules are here on language, but I should probably apologize to the moderators.

When I sent the message to Wakeech, I didn't realize that the entire message would get posted. Oops! Sorry!

So...to whoever is in charge, I wouldn't intentionally say that on your forum.

In person, private email, or my own webpage anything goes, but this is YOUR forum. Sorry again.

Wakeech, I should have specified what should be posted. It's my fault.

Anyway, thanks for hosting this forum. It's !@#$%&$ great!

Thanks Wakeech. (I know you have a first name, but Wakeech is more fun.)

Sometimes moderators get their panties in a bind. I just wanted to avoid getting reamed.

I didn't realize that you were a moderator.
