P0420 CEL W/Racing Beat Test Pipe

Hey guys. I have a car that has a bad cat, and the dealer wants $1,800.00 for a new one. So i decided to buy from racing beat, the $400.00 test pipe kit that takes the place of the cat. It bolted right up and has the bung for the cat 02 sensor to go into. The car runs great and has more power than with the cat on. The only problem is that after i drive 50 or so miles the check engine lights comes on, and when i check it, it pulls a P0420 code. It has to do with the readings from the 02 sensor in the cat. Being as there is no cat, the readings are different. I was told that i need to buy a spark plug fouler adapter, screw that in the pipe and then screw the 02 sensor into that. It will recess the 02 sensor just enough to trick it into thinking there is a cat there. Well i went to buy the one i need and the 02 sensor is to long. The adapter is not deep enough to allow the 02 sensor to screw into it. I was then told by someone that had this setup that i need to take the car down to Mazda, and they could hook there DTC machine/laptop to the computer and do a flash that will completely eliminate that 02 sensor in the system so the light will never come on. But the dealer i went to today said they can't do that do to California law with modifying emissions. So can anyone help me on this problem? I don't mind the CEL staying on but the car loses power and my gas millage goes way down when this light is on. So i would like to try and see if there is any other idea's that you guys have done to fix this issue when adding this test pipe. Thanks.

Cobb Access Port is your answer.
However, since catless is illegal on the street. Hope you have a plan when your smog test comes up.

I'm not sure there is a way of 'eliminating' the O2 sensor code altogether. I have my cat gutted and the 420 code comes up here and there, but has never had an effect on my mileage or power. More of a nuisance than anything.

Again, not sure that the Accessport would allow you to erase that altogether, please correct me if I am wrong.

ROfl, op is full of failed its not even funny

first off, u get that cel cuz u have no cat.

Second, whoever told To get that fouler thing deserves a bitch slap cuz it does not work.

Third, whoever told u that mazda dealer can flash it for u deserves a dick slap from me, and you should make new friends.

At last, that cel does not effect mpg at all, you have another problem somewhere else, learn about the car before you even bother to reply.

The only ways to "mask" the cel is to use a Cobb A/P
Or buy an elm 327, and run the torque program.

I started off using the elm and torque. You can set
It up to automatically clear fault codes. This is a great
Inexpensive program.

However, the Cobb A/P is the better option if you can
Afford one. I bought a Cobb in December. It will allow
You to "mask" cels as well, having your car tuned, comp
Bumped up, etc.

Do some searching on those 2 options and chose what
Suits your needs, wallet.

CEL is expected when de cat. Buy a code reader to make sure nothing else comes on. thats the only downside really. Its all on the forums, been talked about 10000 times.

Your suppose to drill one of the foulers with a 1/2 in drill bit so that the sensor can screw on to it then screw the second one on that without drilling it. It worked for me.

You got lucky

A lot of the early cars ( 04 and 05) seemed to be OK without a CAT and others would throw a code right away.....

There isn't a " fooler" that works..the OBDII cars are too smart for that in most cases. They used to work on the old systems that didn't have an active check on the rear O2 that checked it when it changed the AFR...

I agree with above. My CAT doesn't throw the code often, it's an 04. And I never figured you could make a fool system work.

Live with it? Buy a code reader and erase it when it comes? Lol

boy, there are a bunch of children on this site. You guys are all ********. I'm out of here. I am deleting my account. The guys on the RX-7 forum and the VR-4 forum are not at all like the people/children on this site. You guys need to all grow up and stop acting like little children.

NYCGPS was laughing and condescending of the people that told you what they did. It wasn't directed at you.

The 2nd post that was directed at you is the typical "you need to search", since your post implies that we wouldn't be willing to share stuff about the AccessPORT normally. On the contrary, we have LOTS of information on what it is, how to use it, etc... We aren't very tolerant of someone just asking us to repeat years of forum wide accumulated knowledge. Especially since someone has actually gone through the trouble of typing up all the basics and putting it all in a place that is easy to find and easy to read.

On the other hand, your response was a rather personal attack. If you can recognize the difference, as well as seeing that you will run into many different personality types in every forum, including ones you won't agree with, then there is still quite a bit of value here for you. Otherwise, yes, it's probably best that you leave. We aren't that tolerant of children here after all. We prefer people that can act and think for themselves.

At least the VR-4 forums should be able to tell you what you need to know about your RX-8?

lol, correction

he said other "rotary owners" told him those bs, which means

owners = doesn't mean they know what they are talking about

cancel out the long sentence

owners != knows what they are doing.

a thought for the future:

nycgps, buddy, you have gotten incredibly hostile lately and most of the time it creates tension in a thread that is unneccesary. This thread could have been over and done with in 1 or 2 replies but your hostile remarks took the thread where a mod's involvement was necessary. I dont know what the deal is, but maybe you need to take a break for the forum a bit and chill the eff out.

We all know you are the super-forum-search advocate here ... it is evident by your signature .. but you are starting to venture more towards the side of super-forum-*******. Relax.

I wasn't hostile at all, see the first reply

but people make it so personal, what can I do ?

it's just sad that people can't take ANY criticism these days, nothing doing any research on their own freaking car, and make it sound like it's the end of the world.

and I just updated my sig. hope everybody would do their PART and answer every single question, big or small in a timely manner
