Oil and Plugs

I signed the paper work saturday and I am picking up my RX-8 on Tuesday. I am so exicited. I got one of the 2004s which was never sold, 309 miles on it. GT package on it as well.

Anyway, I wanted to know why type of oil and spark plus everyone uses. Typically I like Royal Purple 5w30 and Bosch +4 plugs. Will these be compatable with my 8? I am new the Rotary Engine scene.

That link says Royal Purple and Synthetic in a Rotary engine is a go. Has anybody else done this?

Ohh Also, In my older cars, before changing the Oil I put this product in with the old oil. It is called something like Gunk Engine Oil Cleaner. It is this really loose liquid that clears out the deposits in your oil. You let your car run with it for five minutes before changing your oil. In the older cars I have worked with it really cleans it out. I notice much smoother idling then with a regular oil change. Is this safe on Rotary engines?

Congratulations, welcome, post pics in your profile or in the Multimedia forum, yadda yadda.....

You have a lot of learning and reading ahead of you. rx8club.com should be several hours/day reading for you for a while.

Oil is a religious hot-button issue around here. Mazda says, and documents in some places (but not in the owner's manual), NOT to use synthetic. There are some hard-core synthetic believers who feel that they know better than the people who designed the engine what to put in it. Read this thread ENTIRELY: cumulative synthetic oil discussion

The spark plugs are unique to this engine. There are are 2 plugs/chamber, a 'leading' and a 'trailing' plug. There are 2 specs of plugs for this engine, standard and hotter heat ranges. There is a TSB related to new plug specs for the standard plugs having been released, and new releases of the hotter plugs are on-the-way. The most important 3rd-party mod that you should do right away is install oil-cooler and condenser protection.


Basically, most of the lore that you know about piston engines is useless with the rotary. Don't try to drive it like a piston engine, don't complain that it doesn't have the same torque curve as a piston engine. It's a rotary, love it for what it is.

Oil helps seal the apex seals. You dilute that, you lose compression, you don't crank, you get towed to a dealer.

Secondly, when you change the oil, only a portion of it gets drained. The rest is in the lines, in the oil coolers, etc. IT NOT A FREAKING PISTON ENGINE!!!!! Forget everything you think you know about how engines work. The oil doesn't all go into the sump when it's off.

Seriously - read all the stuff in my last post before you do anything.

Thanks, This is some great starting info. I have already spent at least six hours reading this forums. There is SO Much information. I'll have plenty more questions in the future.

I couldn't help but ask Royal Purple Directly to see what they say, here is the response I got.





Bob,

Royal Purple 5W20 API SL oil is the recommended product for the RX8 while under warranty for street use. For track use, we would also recommend the Racing 21 (which can also be run on the street but it does not have the paper trail for warranty purposes).

I've attached photos and a chart showing a before/ after dyno run with the 5W20 in an 04 6 speed with 10,000 miles on it. Just by changing the oil, we saw a 2.2% increase in output.

I am also a long time Mazda SCCA racer, having used the RP Racing 21 in my 12a IT car as well as my current Tube framed GT3 RX3 Bridgeport 12a and I use the 10W30 in my 94 R2 Twin Turbo. Racing Beat, a long time Mazda Factory Skunk Works outlet in California has also tested RP and found similar increases and sells the RP from their location.

The Mazda Competition Department recommends the use of a synthetic in rotaries- only the factory owner's manual cautions against the use of synthetics and that leads I believe from the very conservative culture of the Japanese business structure. I have talked with Kobe, the Mazda Manager over the Third Gen RX7 and also was the Racing Manager for the winning 787B Lemans effort in 1991 (which used a synthetic, by the way, in the 4 rotor engine) and he is in favor of the use of synthetics. He recently retired from Mazda and is now a journalist for several high end magazines.

For the manual transmission and differential, I recommend our MaxGear 75W90.

I changed to Royal Purple 5w20 after 1000 miles. Right now I'm at about 8900 and everything is running smoothly.

Motorcraft 5-20 oil and stock plugs are what i'd stay with.
