Red face Oil Light @ 1000 after Oil Change

Usually I have been changing my oil every 1k miles, but this time around I didnt. So today I go to turn on my car, and the oil light came on.....So I imediatly turned off the car and checked the oil. It was low as ****, so I put 3qt oil and filled her back up. Now i wanted to know since I have been changing my oil every 1k miles i realy have never worried about topping of or anything. Is it normal for the "8" to gulp so much oil? Or do you think it was human error? I belive that my local Jiffy lube probable forgot to put the Drain plug back in while adding oil, then once they realized it they quickly put in on. This might help as well I drive the car realy hard always! I park on a drive way painted Orange so i would know if there were any leaks. My oil pressure gauge reads fine, and overall preformance feels the same. So is this normal? 3qt @ 1k?

3qt seems to be a lot of oil. First there is no need to change your oil every 1k miles. Did you check your dipstick before adding the oil and check it every so often until it was full again. I believe from the bottom to top line is 1.8qts (someone correct me if i am wrong.) Secondly the oil pressure gauge on the rx8 is a dumby gauge. It will never move. Thats why you should get your oil level every or every other gas fill up.

Well when i got in the car and turned it on the light came on. So when i went to check the oil it was below the second line. So i added 3 qrts of oil. N now its topped of. But **** man 3qrts 1000miles that ridiculous. Again no leaks on my driveway, im really thinking it was the jiffy lube. I am concerned that is a but load of oil!

Do you have the new dipstick with the 2 lines and 3 dots inbetween them? Like this one http://www.finishlineperformance.com...7-04-1438b.pdf .

you were probably low after the change
and unless you have an aftermarket gauge, it's just a dummy gauge. either on or off

Ok you have the dip stick with just the 2 lines. From the bottom line to the top line is 1.8qts. So if the oil was just below the bottom line you only need to add lik 2qts, 3qts is way to much. Anyway burning oil all depends on how you drive your car. There is no way to know if Jiffy Lube did not add enough oil or it just burned off. Why dont you just change your oil it is every easy to do and plus you know its done right and have the right amount of oil in the engine. So everytime you get gas check your oil level. Add oil when needed

The correct way to check your oil is:
1. make sure you are on a level surface
2. wartm the engine to normal operating temperature
3. turn off and wait 5 minutes for the oil to return to the oil pan
4. pull out the dipstick wipe clean and reinsert it fully
5. Pull out the dipstick and examine the level

Yea, i should be changing in out my self, its just that my driveway is @ a steep incline "/ Yea I overfilled it its way beyond the second line. I just did not want to leave the 3rd bottle half full. And the oil level was id say maybe a 1/2 inch from the second line @ the bottom. So it was low (the oil light came on!). do you guys think I should take it to the dealer?

Just drain your oil and add new. Just do not overfill it again. To much oil is bad for your engine. And what is the big deal haivng a bottle half empty. Your dipstick never lies

I probably wouldn't take it to the dealer right now because you could possibly void your warranty.

I would go have the oil changed at jiffy lube as quickly as possible then just take it to the dealer for a checkup.

Any reason why you haven't had your dealer do the oil changes? I only get charged a little over 30 dollars and evedently you haven't spoken to some of these people that work at jiffy lube.

I already topped it off "bee afraid" i dont think I need to cahnge the oil till another 1k miles. I used to work for Jiffy Lube so i bring them the oil and filters and they do not charge me. Invasion08, why would putting to much oil in the engine be bad? <----sorry for the newb queastion

if it's not terribly overfilled, just leave it to burn off
unless you already did so, i'd go get a catch can/breather for the crankcase since more than likely, the overfilled oil will end up in the intake
and since its jiffy lube, i bet some oils already accumulated

Sounds like a bad oil level sensor, mine comes on when I take this one freeway offramp and never fails to come on even when oil is full. 1000 miles the oil isn't even depleted, it's a huge waste, are you changing filters too? too much oil pressure is a bad thing, that's why you shouldn't overfill.

it's not that bad unless you terribly overfilled. like i said, just watch for oil in your intake from crankcase breather. possibly messing with MAF/TB. clean those out while you're at it, along with the intake accordion.
