Thanks for all the replies. I was just wondering about the indicator.

I did not mean a warning light, I was refering to an actual indicator that some of the more expensive cars have. With such cars it eliminates the need to pull the dipstick and you know exactly when to get a change or add more. Off the top of my head I know the C6 has such an indicator.

C6: $55000
RX-8: $30,000.

Any questions?

Yeah, what's your point? That that the $25k price difference is for the oil level indicator?

The 8 has lots of gadgets, just wondering if this was one of them.

BTW, C6 is not $55k - thousands less even with every option and z51 package. Base is $44 - that's a lot of bang for you buck.

1983 AMC/Renault Alliance - $8,000?

It had an oil-level meter on the dash and was quite useable. Not a high-price item.

No, unfortunatley that isn't one of them But you could get and oil catch can that I think shows oil level, under the hood.

Unhappy Speaking of oil...

Not to happy with the fuel economy which in this cold weather is way less than I could have realistically hoped for. Last night when I re-fuel for the first time since I took delivery last week, I checked the oil and was mortified at the condition of the oil on the dipstick. It looked like a stir stick from a cappucino!! The service manager assures me that that is normal, though I found it difficult to even measure where the oil level was. Any comments?

Yup. There is a TSB out to insulate the dipstick tube to prevent (or at least reduce) this problem. Your dealer should install it under warranty if you ask.

HTH,

Forgot to mention: your mileage should improve quite a bit as you get some miles on the engine. My first couple tanks were pretty dismal (mpg-wise), but the mileage has improved quite a bit since then (I'm at ~1550 miles right now).

Yep, check the "issues and problems" section. This isn't harmful in itself but if it is bad enough to prevent you from easily checking the oil level, there is a fix (TSB) available.

Thanks...I'll mention that.

BTW, I live in Halifax, Nova Scotia and can't wait for the warm weather to come so I can really open her up!!! Cabot Trail has to be one of the best roads in N. America for the 8! My car is black on black/taupe GT.

Just passed 2K miles on mine. And haven't checked oil level yet. 1/2-1 quarter less won't hurt the engine. Are we being too picky???

Oh yeah!! Been there, done that, although it wasn't in an RX-8 at the time. Watch for moose and the drop off's on the curves. :D

1 qt. between 3000 mile oil changes. I get on it when I'm on the highway, but in town or city driving I go like most average citizens.

EDIT - IMHO if anyone goes through 1 qt every 1000 miles must be driving it like they stole it, always.
