Oil Filter Wrench
FYI PEP Boys carries an oil filter wrench that fits the "new" smaller oil filters. It uses a 3/8" drive. It's "RiteFit" model A255 (65mm x 14 flute). Less than $5.
It looks just like the one sold by Trussville Mazda:
Given the location of the filter on the RX-8 and the propensity of Mazda to over-tighten them at the factory, an oil filter wrench is a must-have tool.

I figured they'd have one to fit at Pep Boys.
You can also use a long extension and a universal with one to VERY easily remove it.
BTW, I would still hand-tighten the filter. Using a ratchet might get it too tight for next time.

Absolutely correct. Oil filter wrenches are removal tools only!
