yeah man... I know I always read this page and I am like super eager to know how that new fuel map is going to work.

this power problem is really annoying and I might as well just change my car to an STI or EVO if the chip doesn't help much.

I am not really power hungry but I want to have at least fair performance for a nice looking car. Sometimes when I go on road races, and I just feel bad when other people driving WRX fly by me on straights. Then when the session is over, they come over and say "you are being really nice to your car on straight aren;t you? I bet your car is really fsat". And I jsut dun know how to answer.

SO CANZOOMER, help us release the beast under the hood. HAHAH... :D

x28,

even if you voided your factory warranty and went 'canzoomers stage 3' and a full cat-back exhaust, you still wont have even close to the straight line acceleration of an EVO or an STI. please take into consideration that the EVO and STI are both capable of breaking off 13 second FLAT quarter mile passes in stock form with a very hard launch. this puts it in the company of cars that are at least 20-30,000 dollars more.

but alas, i too am a sucker for more power, and i cant wait to get canzoomers stage 1 on my car!

Yeah, but a lot of that 13 second flat stuff is because of the AWD launch. Once they are rolling, like on a road course, they are still "just" cars that weight 3000 pounds + and put down about 200 hp to the wheels.

I don't know about the STi, but a WRX should be no match for an RX-8 on a road course. Heck a Miata will give a WRX a hell of a time on a road course.

Who cares if another car can beat the RX-8? People bought the cars because they like them. Any car can be made to go fast. I have a turbo 1st gen that I have less than 3 grand in total and it will smoke an Evo. So what? I don't care and I don't need to race one or compare prices to prove anything. If speed was all that mattered then there would be only one car on the road. Buy what you like, modded it how you want and screw anyone who cares. Comparing speed in relation to price is ricer mentatlity.

Actually, stock EVOs and STIs put around 240 and 260 to the wheels. Both cars are somewhat underrated.

Remember the Best Motoring Video with RX8/S2k/ITR/WRX/Miata/Skyline? The WRX beat the RX8 by more than a full second. Not saying one is better than the other, but you are FAR underestimating the WRX.

As for the "still just cars" comment...My friend's nearly stock EVO 8 was tearing up NSXes and C5 vettes on the roadcourse. "Just" any car putting down 200whp will NOT be able to do that.

I don't need to see the video. I've been road racing for years, I've owned a WRX and I've gone around the track in modified WRX's also so I know what they can and cannot do.

I've also been able to "tear up" NSX's and C5s and cars like that on a road course in a stock engined Miata, so an EVO doing it doesn't tell me much because it is so dependant on driver.

You want to see if an EVO can do good against a C5? Watch next year to see if anyone races an EVO in SCCA T1, where the C5 is dominating. Same thing for the STi.

Note that I am not saying that the EVO and the STi are not great cars.
I am making two points here:
1) Once rolling, the STi and the EVO lose a lot of their acceleration advantage.
2) An RX-8 should be able to lap a road course as good or better than a WRX, DRIVER'S BEING EQUAL.

Wow..

O.R.A. do you know what is best motoring? I live in Asia, and i have been reading and driving Japanese performance cars for about 5 years.

The RX8 is not a sports car designed to be ran on track, PERIOD. Even pro drivers in Japan say that. Its understandable, look at RX8's interior and its setup. The car is a luxury sports car that provides fair performance and great design (looks).

About the STI and the Evo's.. do not underestimate them. I am not sure if you guys know their full potentials, but they are mad crazy. At Tsukuba Curcuit in Japan, the Evo and STi are about 7 seconds faster then the RX8. I think the Evo's and the STi were running about 1:04 to 1:05 seconds, and the stock RX8 is running about 1:11 seconds.. and the Mazdaspeed (full conversion) is running about 1:08 which is about one second faster then the stock S2000 (1:09).

I dun believe it myself, but these are pro drivers. They are not drivers that "claim" to be professionals, they are drivers for JGTC campionships, D1 championships, and more.... so THEY ARE GOOD DRIVERS. Japan's most beloved driver Keiichi is one of the test drivers as well.

I own an RX8 myself and I love the 8 but I just want more power. I guess I made the wrong descision buying it and thinking it has 238 hp.... I thought I made a really crazy good descision on buying a leather seated, bose sound system, FR and light weight (kinda) rotary powered car. I bought it for 31500 (tax included), and its damn nice. But after I foudn out that the car doesn't even hvae 238 hp and the performance (speed) is pretty bad. I ran side by side with my friend's E320 and we stayed side by side the whole time and that really sucks. I know i will kick his *** in corners and braking and everythign else.. but.. come on this is a sports car... its suppose to be fast. I apoligize for saying all these, but sometime I just feel really ripped by Mazda. But I am sure some of you will feel the same as me.

Thank you Canzoomer for helping us get back what we are suppose to have. Great work!!!!!

Ok I think I stepped on the 8 enough but the drivers are saying that the RX8 has a lot of potential. There are quite a few companies that are to design parts for the RX8 and I hope there will be more and more and more.... If they become a tuners car in Japan. The popularity of RX8 is going to grow like crazy and a lot more investment is going to be put into making the RX8 better and making parts cheaper!!!!

OK i thik I have talked enough, tho I have said so much bad things about the RX8 .. its just because I like it so much that's why it makes me feel so bad....

peace out!! Happy Halloween.. my custume was RX8...

:D

oh and excuse me ORA I didn't mean to attack what you have said.

but the Evo and the STi really are crazy good. The cast on Best Motoring loves the Evos and they claimed that it was the japanese treasure.

They are nothing like what you have seen in United States. All the good performance cars are coming to US.. that is great!!!!

I head the Lotus Elise is coming too!! YAY!!

just one thing I dun like about US.. too much cops...
If the leave us and our cars alone.. US rulz!!

I know what Best Motoring is. Seen the videos for years also.

I never said that the EVO or STi are not good cars. I never said that the RX-8 would be faster than an EVO or an STi on a road course.

You say that the RX-8 is not a sports car designed to run on the track and I say that neither is the WRX.

Anyway, if you want to start a separate topic about this, that's cool. This topic has been more of a log of canzoomer's development and I don't want to run it off course and make people lose interest in it.

With no car to work on of my own for the last 2 weeks, my progress has been somewhat limited.

However I am told an engine is on a truck within 500 miles of the dealer as we speak, so I expect that next week will be when I resume play.

On the "good news" front, I was told by Mazda Canada today that the Service Bulletin for the replacement oil pans is now in release.

Unfortuntely they still only have a few parts in stock, so it will not be immediate for everyone, but they feel that as cars come in for service they will be close to keeping up on this.

Driving home on highway late at night at 130kmh.
Engine stumbles, check engine light is blinking, loss of power.
Slow drive last 20 miles to next town, stay night in a motel.
Next day coax car to local garage I know, check, nothing obvious, problem seems internal.
At that point I was running dead stock, no mods installed, just highway cruising.

Got car towed to local dealership, and next day they say that Mazda has informed them that reason for this is a failed oil injector, causing front rotor to seize front rotor side seals.
Engine being replaced by Mazda under warranty.
Sigh of relief.

Since then i have been investigating. Seems around 40+ motors in North American RX-8s have gone this way, about 15+ have been replaced when water was detected in oil, about 5-10 by other causes.
While I suppose I may have accelerated the failure by hard use, it seems it was inevitable anyway.
I should get car back early next week with new motor, replaced oil pan, etc.

A friend who rebuilds rotaries for a living is dubious about the story about the failed oil injector, and thinks a bad bearing is more likely.

Perhaps time will tell..

So I gather the Nov 12th date for the completion of the ECU Fuel mod is going to slip a bit?

It should not slip becuase of this. We finished our testing well before this.

The only thing that will possibly delay us is delivery of the connectors from the suppliers in Japan. Some of the items had ridiculously large minimum order quantities ( 6,000 on one connector, for example!) however the manufacturer has been working with us on this, and we expect them to be here in the next few days.

So, God and luck willing we still will be shipping around the 12th.

So Canzoomer, did you have to do a bit of a 'splaining at the Mazda repair shop explaining the two Pyrometers you had installed on each end of the catalytic converter?

Ugh! And then broker fees, and waiting for the packages to clear, and.....

Wait, you are in canada, how does importing work in the land of red maple leaves?

We usually ship things by Fedex Ground. Economical, good tracking system, and they handle the brokerage paperwork.
For something like this, the cost is around $15 for freight.

There is no duty or taxes.

Canada, the USA and Mexico are under the North American Free Trade Agreement, so anything substantially made here is duty free.

I simply told them that the bungs with plugs in them were from when I inserted a fuel/air sensor and pyrometers to investigate why i am getting such awful gas mileage.

Perfectly truthful.

Over the next week we will be setting up a web page for this stuff, and there will be an order form, in PDF format.

You simply download the form, print and fax it back ( if using credit card) or fill in online ( if paying cash, money order, Paypal)

It will be first come first served, as the first batch we are building is 50 units, and we are hand building the wiring hrnesses, which is time consuming.

When the page goes up we will notify those who have asked by email, and then the next day will post to sires like this one.

So, to get on the first order email queue, please email me at:
maurice@harddata.com

Thanks!
