Nylon Motor Mounts

Well I'm already committed .Car is in the shop (04,RX-8,MT) on the lift waiting for the new custom machined nylon mounts to be installed tomorrow . I never heard of that material being used and assumed the way to go would be poly.

I will admit I was a little concerned at first ,but after reading a few post in the dare I say it BMW forums I was put back into a comfortable zone. A good majority of folks swear by em ,but I' inclined to discover what kind of experience's rotary owners have had with this material. The fabricating and install cost $600.00 Canadian.

The pulled mounts were very complex for a mount. The mechanic had said it was fluid filled and quite a bit more complex than he had originally anticipated .Cost went up $100 from $500. I feel he is being fair and trust his judgment .Just cant wait to find out.lol

Any input would be greatly appreciated . Cheers

Stretchier? Less chance of breakage?

Might be abit more vibration during idle though... SHRUG!

Red face

Apparently stiffer with minimal increase in vibration over polyurethane . Firmer than stock and polyurethane.
Been reading more since posting.lol. 2 benefits from what I've read so far are 1) costs less to fabricate and 2) responsivness ie..less driveline binding/powerloss.

Stock mounts are @#%ed .. No current product available other than the squishy stock mounts. The point would be to stiffen the drive line and rattle teeth.lol. .

I have always replaced stock mounts with poly in my rides. It makes for a very responsive shift and creates less driveline binding. This whole nylon business is new to me. From what I've read so far ,nothing but good minus the vibration in other cars.Note: Vibration issues in piston engine vehicles are at 1000 rpm and lower. Nothing to worry about there.he he I hope.

Well its late here and I'll be finding out tomorrow.. I'll post back and let those interested know how it goes..

(edit)/ Well its the next day .Got a call from the shop and looks like I'm gonna have to wait until tomorrow. geez

Picked up car 1 hr ago. All I can say is WoW!.. First thing I noticed when starting was no movement of the shift **** not even a slight movement. When driving very responsive at take off and very solid feel when shifting into gears.Up and down even when cornering. I previously had issues with 1-2 shift . This is gone now. No big increase in vibration at idle ,and a "very in touch with the engine" feel when driving.I am one very happy camper. We'll see how things are in a few days ,but at this point I would recomend this mod to any RX-8 owner.

The mechanic who had done the work had a grin on his face when I went in to shop. He admittedly was very proud of his work once he test drove it. It was so nice to see his reaction as it was a good indication that the mission had been accomplished. I'll get back at ya all l8er. Cheers!

Oh wow.

Can you post the contact info for the shop?

I'm not going to drive to Canada to get this done but maybe someone in my area would be able to do something like this. Or perhaps we can get one of our BHR forum slaves to fabricate one and sell it to the rest of us.

Are you switching to solid differential mounts as well?

Funny you said that .Very good follow up trip to garage or home project. This is next..I suppose it wouldn't void warranty ,but it may although Mazda has admitted the mounts on 04-06 series were a problem. I could really see the Nitrous guys benefiting from this mod as well as the boosters or both. Even the lightly modified or stock cars would benefit if the owner is interested in better performance .

I'll have more info in the next day or two. I'll talk to the Tech about "making to order" if any of you are interested.. Gonna get back out there and do some more observing.

(edit ) I did and well,,,,, lets just say that this has to be the best mod you could do to any car. The drifters will love this mod.Incredible!! you can shift effortlessly up down in extreme cornering while drifting with direct results very controllably (not that this car isn't already responsive) but that spongy feel in the driveline is gone. As well wheel hop is gone ,none zilch.I'm sure the diff mounts made from same material will compliment the above results even more. 1/4 mile times would in theory also improve.

I have been reading a bunch on this the last two days out of anticipation and this seems to be a popular mod on just about every other car and not on the 8.. The track "GT" cars take advantage of this mod from what I've read, however the mounts on those cars are solid and will rattle the teeth out of your head.

As far as warranty goes. These mounts are literally indestructible and I suppose the garage would warranty work. I'll have more for you all soon..
Nice option for the 8 seeing as no after-market item like this exists ..... Until now! Cheers !

unfortunately the metal brackets between them and the engine will eventually break, this is why the race teams quit running them

I was talking to him to see if he would be interested in fabricating a few kits for you guys and he seemed to be interested . I'll hold off on releasing his info until I hear more. Respectfully don't want to commit him to something. One of the nicest guys to deal with too . I can say that without a doubt because I have met many a mechanic in my day.I'm sure he'll have no prob with talking with you or the store owners. l8er..

Yes those were insane (Steel) .. Like I said earlier they would rattle the teeth out your head.lol. Drag racers for the most part use steel and those cars vibrate like jackhammers.. What material did they switch too?

The nylon mounts installed were huge and required quit a bit of CNC'ing. Man the 8 has huge motor mounts. with so much material between the mounts these bushings minimize vibration even though they are hard. Much less vibration than I've had in other cars (even V8's") with polyurethane. As a matter of fact there is less vibration at idle. Thumbs up in my opinion .

From all the reading over at "No Pistons" RX-7 owners and racers love the solid mounts. .As a 8 owner I can agree . I love em too.
