Is it normal for an RX-8 to NOT burn any oil? If not, WTF might be wrong?

Now I've had my car since Mar 09', and have had like 3 engines replaced now. All of them lasted around 10k miles and 18 months. 2 of them were replaced by warranty, and this new one that I got was built by Pettit.

The thing that suddenly hit me today though was I seldom had to oil. I can count by my fingers for the number of times that I actually needed to add oil. I check my oil level regularly. So wtf? I thought we were supposed to burn some oil.

What could be wrong with the car? Could it be down to driving habits? I used to drive all city and short trips. Recently since I've moved, I started putting some hwy miles on it.

Not normal and a lack of oil consumption is bad.

Could be the reason you are through 3 engines already. If the omp is not lubricating the engine properly you would see premature wear throughout. Could be something to look into. I add about half a quart every two fill ups on my 05, which is on its second engine.

The function of cooling the side seals that the OMP provides is as important or even more important than the lubrication side of it.

Well... in that case, it's nice that I started pre-mixing with this engine... What... should I be looking at exactly, not exactly mechanically savvy here. Just did my first oil change in Feb...

Sounds like you need to flush your OMP lines and oil injectors before you lose this engine too. Premixing will NOT save the side seals, you still need the OMP for that.

I recommend adding a SOHN adapter as well, so you can more accurately watch the oil consumption rates, and to prevent the lines from getting clogged again (which dirty 4-stroke will do)

Don't see it ever mentioned much, but there is a RTFM procedure for vacuum testing the oil injectors

given 3,000mile oil changes, if you don't drive hard, and the engine is in good shape you won't have to add oil.

RIWWP 04-30-2014 11:27 AM

I disagree with the "and the engine is in good shape". The condition of the engine won't affect the OMP injection rate. Yes, it's possible to drive lightly enough to not burn through a quart of oil over 3,000 miles, but then you have other problems, like carbon choking.

I seriously doubt he is driving that lightly.

Even driving normally you will have noticeable consumption.

I've tried looking, there's really not a noob guide to check the OMP lines, is this something the dealer can do but would fuck me over? I really don't have the time to do it myself.

Google: site:rx8club.com clean omp line

Gotta use Google :)

Thanks for the spoon. I did come up with those threads and read some of it but none of it makes sense to me lol

And another problem, the SSV was fucked a while ago and I paid like 5, 600 bucks for the dealer to fix it, then Cam at Pettit did something to that vacuum system when he was rebuilding the engine for me, not sure what, he said it was a fix for the vacuum system or whatever, is this related?

RIWWP 04-30-2014 04:54 PM

No, it changes the oil venting lines, which can help keep the intake valving clean, doesn't have any impact on the OMP system.
