New Owner/found oil in air filter housing

Hey guys i'm a newbie to the site.
Gotta say love it so far.
I'm a new/old owner of an Rx8 (2004)
Just wondering if anyone has found it normal to find oil in the air filter box and some saturating the air filter.
Also found some in the tray below the housing.
My car has about 19k on it and just had the cat replaced.
Hopefully its ok- I'm just used to Audi and Porsche since i work with them.
Thanks

hey arrhxeight, welcome to the addiction!
Not 'normal' to find oil there but it's not uncommon. A few ways to fix it are to install a breather or a catch can.

One of the causes to it is if people fill the oil quickly without using a funnel, the oil can make it's way into the intake. Clean it all up, put a new air filter in there and you should be good.
I use a funnel, pour slowly and have never gotten oil in my air box

If you look at your oil fill tube, you'll see a rubber hose coming off the side of it, If you trace this hose, it leads to your upper intake manifold. That's why you're finding oil on your air filter. There is a TSB that re-routes the tube to one of the maintenance ports on the lower intake manifold to prevent this from happening.

Or you can just get a catch can and breather to catch it. I think the only reason they route the tube into the engine is because the EPA would frown upon releasing the vapors to the atmosphere (without a catch can it would also make your engine bay all oily and gross)
