New guy rebuilding an 05 RX8

well could have just sent the pcm to racingbeat for their flash and remove the immobiliser. would be much cheaper than a pcm
I have a local guy who is trying to sell an '04 ECU with the RB Race Flash on it - security lobe gone bye-bye - money back guarantee if you send it back....the only thing you'd be 'out' is Canada shipping, both ways.

Here is the catch about that flashed ECU. When this car is finally driveable, I want it to begin it's new life with me in stock fashion. I don't want to add race parts and then be wondering why things don't quite feel right. Then I won't know if it is the race parts that I added or the flooded car issues. Also, since sending an ECU to racebeat costs $295, I would imagine that the ECU with the RB flash is probably significantly more than that, which really bites into the funding for the other devices I will likely need.
Once I get the car up and running properly, I would absolutely consider this stuff, and possibly even forced induction, but at this point in my RX8 game, I am just not ready for it.
I do greatly appreciate the offer though!

Here is the latest pictorial. I bought 2 yards of jute carpet backing, and yanked off all the original water damaged stuff. I used the original green jute as templates for the new pieces I made, so it looks just like it was when it was new. Then I reassembled the whole interior.
New jute backing!
This is my friend Scott. Yes, he is a Yankees fan and he lives in Massachusetts....
The next thing to do is get it to a dealer so that they can reprogram the immobilizer for me. yay!

zoom44 - Yes, Scott is not right in the head. He grew up in Massachusetts, and frequently goes to Fenway Park wearing all NY Yankees gear, right down to the socks. I know not to go anywhere in public with him during baseball season. It turns out there are quite a few NY haters in Mass.....
Luckily, my entire world revolves around cars, so I don't care which team he cheers for!!

Wow great job on the interior!
You really should of drove it without all that weight, the car must be freaking fast by now...
BTW Did you get the engine and working?

Finally, the moment that you all have been on the edge of your seats waiting for...
The PCM is officially reprogrammed! Friggin Sweeet! Sadly, it still does not "run". However, I did get it to start for about 5 seconds twice....then it was flooded again. From what the guys at the dealer tell me, the gas pedal is not communicating with the throttle body. I'm not too surprised by this since the pedal was under water. So.....that could be a factor in why it doesnt start.
In any case, I can't wait to mess with it again and figure out why the TB isn't playing nicely.

Yet another update: It runs! The gas pedal doesn't do a damn thing, but it does run, and that is the important part. So I gotta decide if it is the gas pedal, the throttle body, or something in between causing this issue. We'll see. Anybody know how to test either?

Well, the car now runs 100% mint! It starts easily, revs up silly fast, and now the only things left to conquer are the check engine light, the tire pressure monitors, and the drivers side seat that doesn't move properly.
Ohhhhh, yeaaaaaa

I figured the last part would be easy :-)
So what was the final fix?
Nice to hear you brought her back to life.
Enjoy
Now if I could get my 8 going...
If you dont mind (can PM me if you like), what did the dealer charge to re-flash your ECM and how long did it take them?

Thanks guys! I am totally pumped. I don't have a scan tool that will read a CAN system, so I have no idea what the CEL is on for. I know about the scanlyzerII, are their any sort of simple laptop based programs that work well for reading engine data? I would like to get something that I can use on other cars in the future. (Let me guess-> "Search!") haha.
Spin9k - The immobilizer was the major fix. The keys were reprogrammed, and the dealer grabbed original build data from Mazda, and smushed it into my used PCM. The first dealer that I went to told me that there were 16 pages of different PCM's for the car, so the odds of me picking the right used one are slim. They also told me it would be a minimum of several weeks at $86 an hour. I then did my own research and found that there are actually about 3-4. It turns out, I DID buy the right one, hence, the first dealer can suck it. When I got the car back, the engine turned over but didn't start. more below...
olddragger & ASH8 - Thanks! I could not agree more! Now I am familiar with RX8's and their computer systems. That is the benefit of buying stuff that doesn't work!
Jst4fun - The final fix was:
* I pulled the spark plugs, clean them off (they were quite fouled from cranking the engine and not having it start), crank the engine with the FP fuse unplugged to clear it out, and reinstall.
* I also unplugged the battery to clear any weird memory that existed from when the spark plugs were fouled. When I hooked the battery back up, it started perfectly, and went into a idle-learn mode (thats what I would call it at least). It basically bounced the throttle around for a couple minutes, then smoothed out and the throttle worked perfectly!
* At this point I realized that there was a massive exaust leak at the front of the catalytic converter caused by somebody cross threading all three nuts onto the studs. (Awesome) So I fixed that and tighten it up again, the problem, is that I didn't have a gasket for it, so it still leaks slightly. The good news is that this leak is a likely cause for my check engine light.
The reprogramming of keys was $90, and the PCM suck & blow of original build data WITHOUT the use of the original PCM was $138. It probably took them about an hour and a half. I could have waited for it if I wanted to, but I dropped it off and picked it up the following day. Overall, worth every cent.
Transam kid 01 - Seriously though, Yankees do suck.
kersh4w - I never like thinking about stuff like that, because it is always more than I think in the end. However, in this case, I feel like I am doing pretty well. If you read the beginning stages of this thread, you can take an educated guess at what I paid for the car, and then tack on maybe $800 onto that for the stuff to make it all work properly. That includes a PCM & Key reprogram, K&N filter, radio, cluster, PCM, battery, Center display LCD thingy, jute backing for the carpet, spray adhesive, and oil & filter.
Things I would like to do in the near future:
* Obviously fix the CEL so I can get it inspected & titled in the near future!
* Get some floor mats
* The heater controls work, but not really, I assume there is a heater/ac control module somewhere that is busted.
* Fix the dent on the left rear rocker.

If you want to read the codes for cheap, go to walmart and pick up a simple scanner. I got as INNOVA 3030 for like $50 and it reads the codes and resets them if you want. Couldn't be similer. Then look up what they by code number here on the forum, there's a list, just search.

Jeremy you make me feel like a slow poke! LOL
Wondering if flood car is easier to get going than an enginless one.
If your bored, can follow my progress:

I feel so close but still so far from turning the key to hear that familiar purr...
