New flash beyond the "R"?
I just got my "8" back from maintenance yesterday and I asked if the reflashed the "engine computer" with the "R". The service rep said "No, there is another one out already and they did flash mine with it." He further stated this one was for a problem with the Oxygen sensor and the Catalytic converter getting too hot when it was in slow traffic congestion. He said a recall would be out soon and to bring it back for the parts replacement, but they won't have to flash it again.
Anyone else here of this?

It's all right here. https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-trouble-shooting-95/recall-thread-mnao-suspend-rx-8-deliveries-66002/
I believe it would be the "E" and "F" flashes.
More info here(pg 3) http://www.finishlineperformance.com.../pdf/3305G.pdf

Actually, if you have an '04, "R" is the latest flash. E and F are for 2005s (M/T and A/T respectively). These are the flashes to address the heat issue. I wonder what is different about the flashes for California cars (obviously something emissions related).
AND, if there isn't any heat damage on your car, you won't be getting any parts replaced...just heat wraps added.
I would imagine we won't see another flash for awhile.

Hello fellow 8 owners. I just purchased a 04.....thats right leftover 04 8 last month. I brought my car in today because they lost the original keyless transmitters and got me knew ones which they had to program. While doing this I also asked for the latest ECU/PCM flash. After it was all done I looked at the service sheet and there was no mention of the Flash version. I was able to catch one of the service techs and politely asked. He went back to the garage for a second and then forwarded the information to the service admin. She said the flash version was MSP040. Any ideas? Thanks.

It looks like you have the same flash my 04 had up until this week. The dealer would not give me any of the updated flashes and would tell me there aren't any newer ones available. My car was on the "M" flash from July 2004. However, I finally received my first check engine light (just over 25,000 miles on the car) this past week and now they "found" a new flash regarding my CEL.
In short, you probably won't be udated until you have a problem (or until you TELL them you have a problem).

Your dealer should be in a lot of trouble with MNAO for refusing to update your car. If you bring your car in, they MUST re-flash per MNAO's demand, even if you are not having any other work done. With this forum, we're going to have information before most dealerships, so sometimes, you have to inform them of what's going on, but if you make a request that is covered under warranty or can prove that there is a TSB for something, they must take care of it.
I'm not saying you don't have them, but it seems a lot of people don't have the ***** to tell a dealership/service shop what they want. I suppose it can be intimidating, but they work for you. You bought your car from them and they are supposed to make you happy. That's what makes some dealerships good and what makes others crappy...service. Granted, there's no need to be an a-hole, but if you educate yourself before going there, you get a ton of respect and they will bend over backwards for you because they know they can't feed you a line of BS and send you on your merry way.

So Zoom, I have a ?; Would my car appear to have been "taken care of" if I have that flash? I have yet to get the recall notice (obviously) but I'm wondering if me having R means I appear to them as having already been inspected, which I know was not done. Thanks.

i went in there last year and showed them the wording for (i think) the L flash update. they refused to look at it, so i called corporate and they called the dealership while i was there. thats where she explained their 'policy'. they did some sort of update (this was before M) and ive taken in the TSB since then but i just run out of patience telling them what their jobs are. this last time the guy lied to my face about the rusty hubs and changed to a different story when i showed him the mazda recommendation and still refused. when i asked him if there was an ecu update to address the flooding, he says 'they are working on it, but not yet'. sorry to vent in this thread. just so frustrating.
this is mazda of oakland, btw.

Oh don't worry, I did all of those things listed above. I printed out the TSB's and showed them to the service manager, I told them I was having hard starts, etc. I even called around to a couple of other dealers in the area.
Then, they were taking care of the recall on my car and they still weren't going to upgrade the flash! He said the only way I needed a new flash was if the CEL was related to the current flash. So, when I go to pick the car up he says "Well the check engine light WAS due to the flash version so we went ahead and updated the pcm". Sort of like "we really went out of our way to help you out". Ha.
I don't think I can do much about it, I've called other dealers, MNOA, etc. I'm not about to drive to another state every time there is a TSB.

no only if they mentioned the recall on the paper as in "did work according to 3305g" etc
