need advice on brake pads

not sure if this will help but.......
ive got an 05 6spd 8 and the brakes squeal like mad like most others on this board; its a total joke and with summer upon us and the hotties out in full effect, i cant be makin those kinda noises;
anyway, went into dealer for oil change; mentioned the brakes; was told no prob and there is nothing they can do; yadayadayada, they are idiots and would not put up with this for 5 seconds in their own car but its ok in mine of course was told there are no brake pad options for me b/c it is a high perf brake, yadayadayada, bullshit; so my question is this; is there simply a brake pad i can buy that will 100% eliminate squeal? any thoughts?;

No brake will completely eliminate the squeal but you try getting a good set of ceramic pads or even some carbon/ferro composite pads. Hawk makes both and are very resonable in price. I run ceramic and have had very little squeal...8k on the pads and still counting.

Hey MikeR I noticed the same thing on my several months ago. I went in for my 30k check-up and full circle service and I talked to my service manager about the terrible squeal coming from the brakes. I also printed this TSB (Techinical Service Bulletin) http://www.finishlineperformance.com...01-06-1568.pdf and took it in with me.

Turns out my car did qualify for replacement under this TSB and my pads were replaced under warranty. Chances are you qualify also.

They replaced the pads because my car qualified for replacement under the TSB. I believe it's determined by VIN

I too complained about my brakes when I had my car in last week for something else. I brought in the TSB, and that seemed to be what made them do the replacement.

It is annoying and it should not occur. This is the first car I have owned that did this. Others make the noise when the brake pads get worn, but not all the time!

G/L,

Ed

Yeah I also took that TSB with me when I went in for an oil change and a couple other things.From what I was told last week there are reports of squeaking brakes even after the revised TSB is performed. So the TSB is not necessarily a "fix all". That came from the service manager, so take it with a grain of salt. He also stated that Mazda is working on another fix for this issue. Now I'm not to sure if the revised TSB is a different pad all together or just the shims.
I decided to just get a good quality set of aftermarket ceramic pads and put them on myself.

i know its total bs comin from the dealership but ill mention the tsb when i bring it in next;

however, if i decide to just go the ceramic pad option, I8U and tiggerlee, is there any specific ceramic pad i should look for?; you mentioned Hawk, I8U, is there a specific model to look for?;
i think im gonna go this option just to say f-u to mazda cause the rx8 is my pride and joy and it kills me to hear the squeak every single time i stop;

The Squeak will come back even with the new pads.

Theres a new fix (someone mentioned it already) that add some oil to smooth things out.

ahh, like mine, changed I think 2 months ago? squeak again, annoying as hell, and Im going to bring it in this coming week.

but I guess the OE pads just simply suck.

Aftermarket is the only way to go.

Well I'm just getting tired of hearing it squeal. It seems to be getting worse . I think I'm going to just bypass any future fixes Mazda may come up with and upgrade the pads myself.

Here are the part numbers you need: HB378Z.565 - rear, HB470Z.643 - front
You can get them from prostreetonline.com, tirerack.com, or mostly any other place if you just search for it.

Well yea it gets kinda annoying to go back to the dealership every so often, sitting there for 5 hours just to install new pads (which takes less than 15 minutes)

But ahh, its free replacement so I dont see why not ! (call me cheap )

But if this fix the Squeal, and pad worn out (I will call it worn out if it doesnt squeak for at LEAST a year or more) then I might just go for Endless pads.

thanks for the part numbers I8U, gonna check into pricing today today;
thanks for the input everyone; to me, it would be the best $$$ i ever spent on my 8 and it seems many others feel the same; why put ourselves thru the bs of going back again and again to the dealer for something that "may" fix the problem;
once i get the pads ill post on the cost of install and the final results;

I got the Hawk Performance Ceramic pads about a month ago, and I'm VERY pleased with them. Now that they're fully bedded in, I can see that they do have more braking power than the OE pads. The "feel" is a little different - they don't brake as much with just a little pressure on the pedal, but as you increase pressure they brake much more (if that makes sense). The OE pads seemed a little "grabby" at times, especially at lower speeds. These are much smoother, and brake even better at higher speeds.

So far they have -0- noise and no noticeable dust. But they only have a couple hundred miles on them, so it's a little early to tell.

I got mine from The Tire Rack, $68US for the front set, and $67 for the back set: Hawk Performance Ceramic Brake Pads

^Here are the basics for bedding the brakes:

1. After installing new brake pads, make 6 to 10 stops from approximately 30-35 mph applying moderate pressure.
2. Make an additional 2 to 3 hard stops from approximately 40 to 45 mph.
3. DO NOT DRAG BRAKES!
4. Allow 15 minutes for brake system to cool down.
5. After step 4 your new pads are ready for use.

I did not have a problem till I had new Mazdaspeed pads installed - they squeal really bad.
Cost me NZ$300 for them + installation !
Won't do that again .

Hey Miker - "Bedding in" means that the pads actually deposit some of their material onto the surface of the rotor, and conform to minor bumps and ridges. I8U listed the basic procedures from The Tire Rack in his post above.

In addition to that, I took part in an Autocross about a week after getting my pads. At the end of the course, there was a straight hard-braking area. I did a total of 10 runs that day, so that was 5 hard brakings in the morning, and 5 more in the afternoon. After that it felt like my brakes worked much better.

Even if you don't do several hard brakings like I did, your new pads will continue to "bed in" over the course of a couple of weeks. Usually a week or two of normal use beds them in completely. Note - you should never race on new brakes that haven't been properly bedded in, since their stopping power won't be at its best.
