Does anyone know if it is necessary to change oil after break in period (~600 miles)? If it is necessary, should I push my car over 4k rpm after the the oil change?

While it'd be nice to baby the car in that, I can't imagine that it is wholly necessary. I had wanted to change mine after 600, but 2500 has crept up on awfully quick, so it'll have to be this weekend. I did examine the dipstick after 600, and the oil looked really clean, smelled like oil, and - wow - felt like oil. Definitely give it a look, but if you're too busy or worried about the semantics of changing it just yet, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Especially since the manual does not suggest an oil change until 5K (Heavy schedule). That said, I'm still changing mine every 2500 since the dealership will have the pleasure every other oil change.

 

it's not about theclean oil..it's about the metal particles that gotten off from friction of the brand new motor...it's better to do it early....

Series 5 and 6 13B's lasted much better when owner's revved them up a bit, and even better when they used the warning beep as a shift point . it's all down to the oil metering system: i'm not sure how it is on the new 13B-MSP, but it's designed to be run hard, certainly. don't over baby it.

 

one of the classic modes of failure of high-mileage rotaries is in "girl cars" -

in general girls drive too gentle, never go above 4k, and the motors eventually get full of carbon and soot and lose compression or lock up entirely.

I've seen this a dozen times on older RX cars.

rev it up, clean it out!

 

You don't need to worry about the metal particles -- that's what the oil filter is for ...

 

I thought I was conservative staying under 6000rpm for the first 600 miles - keeping below 4000rpm must be driving you nuts! From 600 miles to 900 miles I let the revs creep up to redline (about 1000rpm increase every 100 miles), and by 1000 miles I was redlining dozens of times a day and hitting the rev limiter at 9500rpm occasionally. At 1150 miles I did the first oil change (free of course) as I assumed that metal surfaces within the engine had knocked any rough edges off each other by now. From now onwards oil changes will be every 3500 miles or so (at no cost I believe).

BTW the manual says gentle break-in is not required, but does recommend avoiding constant engine speeds or sustained engines speeds above 7000rpm for the first 600 miles. Also it suggests oil changes every 5000-7000 miles, which I think is too infrequent.

 

I agree with Keeper. The oil filter takes care of the particles. If I'm not mistaken, the question probably arises because of the old practice of using a "break-in" oil for the break-in period. Since this is no longer the practice, the oil can be left in.
