my dealer will have my car for a week

My dealer service department gave me to options The first option is they have to replace my evap unit. They also told me they have to take the rear apart (wheels, axle, differential, and other components they said I wont have my car for at least a week. Second option wait for the ECU upgrade and hope it fixes the engine light. So what do u think I should do wait for The upgrade which will take a month or so. or not to have a car for 1 week while it gets fixed.

If it's a warranty repair the loaner car program included in the RX-8 warranty should provide you with another car.

I musta missed something. What's wrong with ur car? If it's that messed up and they're tearing it down, just return the darn car (do you have that option due to the reduced hp thing?) then get a new RX-8.

1. You'll get a brand new car with zero miles vice whatever miles you've got now.

2. Whatever problem you're currently suffering presumably your new car won't have.

3. Whatever the repair techs plan on doing to your car, keep in mind this will be the first time they've ever done it on an 8. You're a guinea pig! who know if it'll be right after they reassemble everyting, and in another week you forego your option for returning the car.

It's worth thinking about anyway. Good luck!

Yeah, having them tear down the whole rear end sounds pretty excessive.

Once it's apart, it will probably never go back together properly again.

So what exactly is the problem? Did you get a CEL and throw a code?

If that's the case, demand the code(s) and post it up here asap.

It's part of your warranty. Whether you're 16 or 116 they have to provide you with a loaner unless there's some verbiage in the fine print saying something like loaners won't be provided to those under age 18, or 21, etc.

The verbage on the sticker does say LOANER.

It does not state RENTAL, where in some states or agencies, you have to be at least 21.

Ok, time to show off my infinite ignorance. What's an evap unit, how does it get flooded and what does it get flooded with? Sorry for the bonehead question...

Ok, have you asked for the codes yet?

Could be as simple as a pinched hose, but it's hard to diagnose cars over the internet.

You shouldn't need any oil.

The fuel in the tank doesn't just sit there, and modern vehicles has a sealed tank/filler cap. Gasoline evaporates and expands in the heat, and the tank has tubes connected to the top of the tank that hold the gas vapor, and collected it in a charcoal canister that then releases the vapor into the engine- this way you don't have gas vapor leaving the car.
Because of the system, you are NEVER supposed to top off the tank on any modern vehicle (70's and newer). Fill until the handles kicks off, then place fuel hose back in the bracket, and place the fuel filler cap carefully back on.

and where do you find FULL SERVICE filling satations anymore?

Thanks, Realistic. I feel so smart now. I think I'll go back to designing my Space Elevator! :D

If getting to the evap units requires removing the fuel tank, then I think the rear end will have to come out. Someone had a pic of the rear suspension while the car was on a lift, and the fuel tank straddles the driveshaft tunnel like saddlebags. It can't be a pretty sight for a mechanic. My sympathies.

Some states do not allow self-service, so all filling stations are "full service" (meaning they pump the gas for you). Two that I know of are Oregon and New Jersey, there are probably others.

I agree with selling the car back if you can; this problem is not a good sign, but it may be completely fixable. Good luck!
