54 degrees from the vents sounds like it's cooling to me. If it continues to be a problem for you, have your dealer check it out. There is a TSB for an A/C amplifier which allows the compressor to cycle more quickly than the original amplifier. It may help in your case.

When you say "WOT position" are you referring to engine speed or the AC settings (i.e., set to coldest, recirculate and high fan)?

If it is engine WOT, then the AC is supposed to cut out momentarily. Search for details.

If it that the AC settings are full cool ("WOT") then you may have an issue. I seem to recall that the specs say the output air should be in the 40's F.

How did you test this, most places will take the car to a highway situation where they are at a constant 55mph or higher and make sure that the A/C is cooling at least 15 degrees below the outside temp and deem that acceptable, if you are sitting at idle of course the A/C is not going to cool very well there is not enough engine speed to keep the compressor spinning very fast.

I wish carmakers would just quit using belt-driven things.. we allready have electric steering assist, BMWs now have electric water pumps.. I can see electric compressors coming soon.. run the compressor at a fixed speed regardless of engine speed (ditto for the waterpumps, improving cooling.)

This is at highway speed with new amp installed. I did a search and some guys are getting reatings in the 45 degree range. Now for a heat pump I can see 15 deg diff.... Not for a auto.

Compressors take a whole lot of power. But the trend is in your favor. The problem now is you can only go so far with 12 volt systems. I think I've read that the newer standard is coming soon (36 or 48 volts, I forget which).

If it's only 15 deg. cooler than you've got problems. When you said some people get 45 degs. there more to take into consideration than ambient temp.(humidity is a big one). Just as a rule of thumb from 50 deg to 86 deg ambient temp., your center vent temp should be between 43 and 46 deg. after that it slowly rises to no more than vent temp of 50 deg at 104 deg ambient temp. If you take it in blowing at 54 deg the dealeship could easliy NPF it . But if you want something to back up your arguement tell them to check page 07-10-03 service manual (it even has pretty pictures for them).

Try checking the middle vent temp on fan setting 2 while you are driving. The higher the fan speed the less the air will cool. Before the amplifier mine fluctuated between 47-53 or so degrees. After the amolofier it is no between 42-46 or so degrees. This is in Phoenix with 105-110 outside temp. It does go up to around 60 when idling. The compressor is not going fast enough.

Did the A/C line upgraded a week ago

Did the A/C line upgraded a week ago. 52 with 80 degree's outside. Took by Mazda and they said they would look at it be could not today. Said they had a car with 1.3lb Freon in it then evacuated and added 1.4 lb and brought temp down to 40 degree's. He said the A/C's were very sensitive to amount of freon.

You can try this mod :p :

Super Cold A/C

If this guy can make that thing run, I do not see why you can not have an electric motor to move original compressor.

Yikes! I guess it depends on how much current that AC requires and what kind of alternator the owner has. But even something around 1000 watts would be taking everything the RX-8 alternator has to give and it's a pretty powerful unit (90 amps, I believe). That's why 12 volt system makes this difficult.
