I belive I saw thread here where someone mentioned that Mazda "does not recommend" using synthetic on the rotary engine.

I think just sticking to the usual 5-20 oil will do you just fine.

hehe i use synthetic..if you read your manuel tha tcomes with the car it doesn't say anything abotu natural or synthetic...just says sae 5w20

as long as it meets their standards you shoudl be fine...lots of people use synthetic in rotarys..mazda says not recomended b/c they never tested this engine or any rotary with synthetics...go figure. a few places tha twork on rotary engines (performance shops) i've talked to recomended switching over to synthetic after teh engine was broken in and had some miles on it...but to do a gradulate switch. but to each his/her own...that's just my opinion :D

My RX-8 came with a manual and several information cards. On one of those cards it talks about oil and it specifically states to use Non-Synthetic oil. Take that for what it's worth.... but there is something in writing from Mazda about this topic.... and personally, if they felt it was important enough to point that out... I'll probably take it into consideration....

i was curious, because i've always heard that Mobil1 had on its website not to use synthetics in rotary engines...so i went and looked.

i looked around the site, and didn't find anything, so i did a search and found this...
Myth: Using Mobil 1 will void the warranty on my new car.
Reality: Mobil 1 with SuperSyn Technology will not void new car warranties, with the exception of the Mazda rotary engine (Mazda does not recommend any synthetic motor oil). Mobil 1 exceeds the API and ILSAC motor oil service requirements for all new vehicles, both import and domestic. If in doubt, always check your vehicle owner's manual or contact your vehicle's manufacturer.

Since most new car warranties call for shorter service intervals than those enabled by Mobil 1 Extended Performance, we recommmend you follow the recommendations in your owner's manual while your car is under warranty.

thats well and good, but thats not their opinion, they are just repeating what mazda told them.

you can also search what oil is best for your car...so i selected rx8 and it returned these:
Mobil Clean 5000 5W-20
Mobil Clean 5000 5W-20 is a conventional motor oil that delivers proven protection of critical engine parts from lubricant-related failure for 5,000 miles or six months, whichever comes first. It is designed to exceed most engine warranty requirements.

Mobil Clean 7500 5W-20
Mobil Clean 7500 5W-20 is a synthetic blend motor oil designed to exceed engine warranty requirements. It delivers guaranteed performance and protection for up to 7,500 miles or 6 months, whichever comes first. Mobil Clean 7500 has 18 percent more cleaning agents than Mobil Clean 5000 to keep your engine cleaner longer.

Mobil 1 5W-20
A fully synthetic motor oil, Mobil 1 5W-20 with SuperSyn Technology exceeds the industry's toughest standards and outperforms all conventional oils. Mobil 1 is recommended by leading car manufacturers as initial fill.

so, there's some information, use at as you will.

I'm using Mobil1 5W30, but I've only got less than 8,000 miles on the car. Ask me in another 150,000 miles or so.... :shrugs:

I have been told, by the dealer and others that work on them, that synthetic oil is not good for the apex seals. actually that it is very bad for them. I would not use synthetic.

this is all you really need to read.

If synthetic oil has already been used in your car, is it bad if you switch back to non-synthetic oil?

hmm wonder why i didn't get one...oh well i've used synthetic (royal purple) in my car for about 30k miles out of 35.5k on my car..i got no issues..hah ai'll let you know in anouth 100k or so if it's alright :D

oh and i believe racingbeat uses synthetic in all their rotay engines. they've been doing it for a long time without issues...so i think i'll take that as a good sign...btu to each his or her own. :D not like mazda will be able to tell how long you've put in synthetic or even if you have....as long as you dont' tell them or ask the dealership to do the oil change with mobil 1. (whic h they do sell at my dealership now for oil changes...go figure)

ah well this debate has been going on for 20+years and it will continue to go on. hehehhe

Funny, isnt this a Dealership and mighty good one if I must say. I've read about them in many mags. http://www.finishlineperformance.com...n&key=RX8M1009

Seems they don't mind you using Redline Synthetic in the RX8's

Remember this, cars are like women. The worse you treat them the better they are to you. I find it funny that people think they have to change oil every 3000 miles and that they must use the best oil. I have had Rx7's in the past and the older the car was the less you had to change the oil. Who do you believe, the car manufacturer or the oil companies. I have an 04 BMW M3 whose warranty goes to 50,000 miles. It is going on about 9000 miles between oil changes and BMW will not touch it until I reach 12,000 miles even though I have only put 2000 miles on it since Sept. of 04. But they stand behind the car and as most of you know the M3 engine is a very unique engine that likes to be driven hard. I bet if you just use the correct wt. oil no matter what brand it will work just as fine as the expensive stuff. A motorcycle mechanic friend of mine said the same thing about my Yamaha R6 in regards to going easy on it for the first thousand miles. He said bull, ride it like you are going to ride it for the life of the bike and I did and four years later just before I sold it it did not give me one bit of problems other than a dead battery.

Remember, opinions are like ********.
BMW is a bad example to use for two reasons. BMW pays for initial maintanence so it's in their interest to stretch the service interval as much as possible. Remember "lifetime fluids" like tranny and diff? Before BMW paid for service they recommended changing them every 30k miles. Once they paid for service it suddenly became a "lifetime fluid" that didn't require changing. Ever. What they didn't mention is they defined "lifetime" as 100k miles--after that point they figured you would have sold the car and moved on to the next.

BMW has since dropped the "lifetime" designation but their current service intervals are designed for people who keep their cars an average of five years or 100k miles. If you keep a car longer than that you definitely want to change fluids more often than they recommend.

Well then check the service manuals for RX7's and there you also find that the oil changes are set for well over every 3k as car gets older and the only one paying for maint. on those cars are the owners.

Why? I hate it when people throw out an opinion with no data to back it up!

I addressed this in my second point, namely that car manufacturers have an implied interest in getting people to buy new cars. Do you take everything manufacturers say as gospel from on high? (249 hp anyone? )

There is a well known motorcycle tuner mentioned elsewhere who advocates running piston engines to redline as the best break-in method. He gives hard proof to back up that claim. So why do car manuals say drive the car easy during the first few hundred miles? His theory is that's when people aren't familar with the car and the break-in "excuse" is a good way to make them comfortable with it before trying more "spirited" stuff. It sounds like a good theory to me.

I have been using Redline in all my cars for over 10 years with amazing results.
I started in my 8 at the first oil change.

I know Mazda does not recommend it.. for reasons only Mazda can understand.

My opinion of course.. but switch over asap.
The benefits of synthetic are huge.
