Mazda 5w-30 shelf life?

Hi all

I have looked around the forum and on the web and cannot get a definitive answer on how long Mazda 5w-30 oil can be kept on the shelf before it is best to replace it. I have two 5 litre bottles that I used for topping up purposes. One is about 3 years old the other only 12 months.

Some dealers I have spoken to say max 6- 12 months before throwing it out. some say its fine indefinitely???? It is just sitting on the shelf in its sealed container.

It is the Mazda factory oil API-SL 5w-30 Any feedback appreciated.

Thanks

Ice

It lasted 100's of thousands of years in the ground...what do you think is going to happen in a sealed container in any human timescale?

That's what I am getting generaly. Either its fine for ages, years perhaps. Then I am told no, it is a mineral oil that should not be kept once opened for more than a year.

It cant hurt to have some fresh oil though, so I may go buy a new batch.

of course they would prefer you throw it away and pay way too much for some more from them ...

bullshit, u can keep it as long as you want it to. just store them at cool and dry places and u're good. u should worry about the can rust out (outside) before you worry about the stuff sitting inside.

Here you go, Blackstone Labs just did a test on 50 year old oil.

i wouldn't say it has an indefinite lifespan since the additives in the oil will break down over time and offer slightly less protection but you likely aren't going to let oil sit on the shelf for 5+ years anyways.
