The knob fits. That's it.

Hesselrode 03-24-2015 12:12 PM

Why don't you get one from the junk yard. Car-parts.com

Smutterbutter 03-24-2015 12:28 PM

I've been watching ebay for awhile, nothing there. I'll try carparts next. If I can;'t find a used on I may just go with the Axial SS in the end.

This is what I mean: 17-510

Well, I guess I kinda answered my own question...After further review it looks like part # P610-17-510B includes everything one would need, minus the bushing.

I checked, the Miata shifter part # is different (M529-17-510A) and costs about half of what the S2 shifter does. But if the both share the same transmission, maybe the Miata shifter is shorter? Cheap SS kit anyone?!

It looks completely different, so maybe not. I suppose it would make too much sense. I just assumed they swapped the PPF mount from one side of the tailhousing to the other. It's all different, huh ...

Hesselrode 03-24-2015 02:29 PM

I don't think they shar the same trans but they do both bolt up. I was talking about getting the whole trans from the junk yard. I got mine complete with shifter and throw out bearing and fork and bell housing for $1200 shipped. It only had 18,000 miles on it.

TeamRX8 03-24-2015 02:56 PM

some of the yards don't have or include the shifter. Did you try a WTB ad for an OE here? Somebody who did the AF shifter may want to part with the OE.

Yikes! I have the trans already (50k mi), managed to find it for $400 local but sans the shifter unfortunately.

Contacted Mazmart to see what he had, I'll try a WTB add but seems like hardly any S2 parts/partouts come up at all.

I have an S2 AFE, I just have not installed it yet. When I do, I will have a stock S2 shifter available.

Smutterbutter 03-24-2015 03:45 PM

Dibs!

Devil Doge 04-01-2015 03:59 PM

Ok, I was searching and perhaps I didn't search the right terms. What is the PPF?

dannobre 04-01-2015 04:00 PM

Power Plant Frame...ties the transmission to the diff with a rigid mount

9krpmrx8 04-01-2015 04:05 PM

This long black metal piece, it connects the engine/trans to the rear differential.

Devil Doge 04-01-2015 04:12 PM

Oh. Ok. I've seen that before when we did Ronnies transmission, I just didn't remember it being called 'PPF'. Thanks guys!

Smutterbutter 04-03-2015 04:29 PM

can someone who's done this swap describe or show pics of how to rewire the neutral and reverse connectors?

Hesselrode 04-03-2015 05:42 PM

You have to ohm it out and figure out which one is which, I can remember. Then cut off the old connectors and I soldered and heat shrunk mine. I also used the new style connectors not the old ones.

TeamRX8 04-03-2015 11:04 PM

you're rebuilding a rotary engine, but are stumped by a simple on/off 2-wire sensor connector rewiring? Wtf .. :)

I had an extra pair of old S1 switches, snipped the connectors with wires off of them, and replaced them on the S2 sensors with another set of simple snap-plug connectors. This allows me to plug it into my S1 harness, swap in an S1 trans in an emergency, or install snap-plug connectors on replacement S2 sensors and plug them in without any issue ...

snap-plug connectors, cheap & easy

P601-17-510H is all NC 6 SPEED.
P610-17-510D is S2 RX-8 6 speed shifter

M529 is NC 5 speed.

TeamRX8 04-04-2015 10:55 AM

^^not sure that it matters since they seem to be an entire different design.

This picture would be made perfect if it had a big ol' American flag on the top of the PPF.

snap-plug connectors, cheap & easy

Hahaha, I will gladly admit my limitations and most anything electrical beyond wiring speakers is not easy for me.

So in the end you wind up with the S2 end of the neutral/reverse connectors with snap plugs leading to the S1 harness? What do you do about water/dirt? I would love to see a pic of the end result.

Which ones, there are 3 I listed?...

Not in P66M they (2) are almost identical.....the P part number ones.

Smutter in post says he was "searching" for a NC Miata shifter, he came up with a M529-17-510A, which is incorrect for any 6 Speed P66M trans.....does he not have an S2 P66M trans??..

NC's is USA (NA) have 5 and 6 speed Transmissions, totally different.

TeamRX8 04-04-2015 07:27 PM

If you read thd thread progress. It was because I (mistakenly) suggested that S2 and NC 6-spd shifters might be interchangeable. After I looked at the NC 6-spd parts diagram it seemed obvious they are not. So the NC shifter discussion became irrelevant after this was realized.

The OE sensor connectors see not well sealed against dirt or water. Again, low voltage on/off simple wiring signal

Smutterbutter 04-27-2015 10:51 AM

Gonna give the neutral/reverse wiring a try today, thought this would be a good spot to link this "How to" for my fellow noobs out there!
