Low RPM Sputtering

Hi guys,

You've probably seen my other posts about my 8. I have an '05 RX-8 with about 38,000 miles on it.

Lately, I've been starting up the car and after about 3 minutes of warming up, the car would start to sputter a bit when the RPMs dropped to 1,000. It's almost like it needs help to warm up. I started to lightly rev it and it sounded clunky. The tailpipe looked a bit wet and after I shut the car off, light smoke was still coming from the pipes.

Here is my service history (All within the past 3 months):

-Engine replacement by dealer
-fuel lines + hoses replaced by dealer
-new plugs + coils by dealer
-oil flap repair by dealer

After all this was finally completed, I took it home with no problems.

The weather here in Philly started dropping a bit and we've had a good amount of snow.

I'm thinking that maybe the fuel in the tank is starting to freeze a little bit which is causing the sputtering in the engine.

Anybody have any ideas?

1) Gas in your tank can't freeze...gas freezing in the lines is possible though
2) light smoke and wet tips are normal for the RX8
3) If you take the car out after it warms up does it drive normally?

Brought the car to the dealer. A tech that has been working on 8's for 10 years was finally back at work after an injury. He said that the engine that I had replaced is shitty and was made in a plant that has had several problems.

There was a problem in which oil was being sent out through the tailpipe. Not sure what the hell that means but the guy said whoever made the engine can't tell the difference between **** and pizza.

I have my 2nd engine on the way now.

Nice to hear that. I mean... not about the engine but a tech that behaves like that deserves some merit

Most definitely. After 5-6 trips back to the dealer, I think I deserve it

Hell mine does the same. From what others have said it's just lugging. It'll happen when I'm below 2k in 3rd. Just keep the rpms up a little an it shouldn't sputter. Also about the oil in the tail, could be happening to me judging from the smell lol
