Low oil no warning

I had a scary situation recently. I bought my 8 as a demo with 7100kms on the clock (4400mi). Did an oil check and found a dry dipstick!!

No warning lamp and the gauge showed more than 50%.

Took it in and the dealer filled up the oil. Almost 3 liters were missing. Don't worry they said, theres 7 liters in there so you're OK.

So I check the manual and it says that the oil change capacity is 3 liters. But on the factory site it says 6.7 liters (6sp MT).

I have followed the threads on capacity and I figured the coolers and lines are holding about 2 liters leaving about .5 in the filter.

My question is....with a sump containing about 1.2 liters of oil, why no warning light, not even in cornering. And shouldn't the pressure change with low level?? My RX - 7 would light up when I was down 2 liters and a chime sounded.....

on mine i only got the low oil light when driving about 70 to 75 mph. this i guess is what it takes to get the oil out of the pan.

it happened about 100 miles before i was going to change the oil anyway.

drained and it took 4 qts to fill.

beers

That means that you have a defective oil pan, not that the oil is too low! There's a TSB and a replacement oil pan to deal with that problem.

Zedcaster - the oil pressure gauge is just an idiot gauge, like an idiot light - it doesn't actually show oil pressure, it just shows "some pressure exists" or "no pressure". Yes, the change capacity is 3.7 litres or so, but total oil capacity is around 7 litres.

Regards,
Gordon

pressure should be normal right up to the point where the oil pump intake starts sucking in air. The low oil light should come on before that time though.

On my 3rd gen the low oil light came on when the level was just a hair below 'low' and IMO the light should *not* be used as a casual 'you should check the oil' indicator..
