Lookin for some leads

I have an AT. Last week I was using the steering shifter and the down shift was fine. The up shift worked after a few tries. Everything was fine until today. The up shift does not, will not work. Down shift is fine. Manual mode in the console works flawless. I'm just looking for someone to point me in the right direction to correct this.

I have seen the buttons on steering wheel fail before, requires replacement. But it could be purely electrical/wiring as well.

I believe this is a fairly common problem in the '04-'05 models(?). I had to replace a switch not long ago for a customer and was told by our local Mazda Tech, the only one trusted by we here in AZ, that he had seen a lot of it. Not a swap I would suggest for the novice.

If its that complicated than I will stay away from it. Just for clarification though, its a switch for the up shift only? I did forget to add, yes. Its an 04. I guess this is when I should be happy I bought an extended warranty. I just hate the two dealerships here in the area. Maybe I should set up a saturday appointment with Rosenthal and make the drive?

IIRC, Rosenthal has a good reputation around here.

Thanks for the actual lead Charles. Process of elimination, determined it to be in the steering wheel itself. Decided to operate. As I don't use the steering shift often, I chose to unplug the main wire harness and both up shift plugs. took compressed air and blew everything out. Before completely reassembling the steering wheel I gave it a try. Presto, fabulous! Works again. Keep in mind since I disassemble a variety of doors removing glass and its mechanisms for a body shop to repair the sheet metal, I know better than to unplug the airbag wires.......

So thanks, Charles for the lead on where the possible Teknics suggested electrical problem. I'm half tempted to get the prorated amount back for my extended warranty. The help this site provides a mechanically inclined person is more valuable.
