Damn I really want my Cobb AP to get in so I can get a little better MPG's... I always get 180-200 city driving, and I have gotten 280 miles to a tank on highway. With MM's tune, BHR Ignition system and midpipe on the way I'm thinking I can get a good 320miles on highway.

I know on the way back from the Texas8 I had like 250miles to a little under half a tank, draft is a big deal on MPG's, if you can stay behind a car your whole trip you will gain a good 80-100 miles on your tank, based on what I saw my car do...

You could run the Economy tune but it limits revs to 6700RPM.

i feel for ya 9krpm... as i've stated in dozens of other mpg threads, i can get 26/27mpg on the hwy cruising with traffic(US hwy, not euro).. i must have a happy motor. relevant mods are AP/MM tune, BHR coils, gutted OEM cat. thats it.

I actually don't really care so much anymore because I don't drive a ton now so cost wise, it's not an issue but what gets me is how all over the place and inconsistent it is.

i never bothered me either, and i can easily get under 15mpg, especially out here in europe. but i had to tone it down some couple years back, i put 36K miles in 12 months. on an island, that you can circle in 2-3 hours...

wont be an issue next summer though, 50-55mpg and much faster than the 8, here i come!

honestly, i almost wish i was keeping it longer because i'm pretty confident that with the right mods/changes i can make 30mpg on my motor, i'd like to see pppl's reactions if i could tell them i was making double their mpg! lol

The truth about the RX8: Careful driving gives you marginal gains. There's really no point in granny driving. Just have fun and don't think about it. If you get anywhere from 15 mpg and up, you shouldn't complain.

With my TDI, I make about 35 mpg driving it like I drove my RX-8. That's 50/50 city and highway. If I turn on cruise control and turn off the AC, I've gotten 51 mpg on that same route. Lower speed to 55 mph, and it will get 60-70 mpg. The trick is to do it over a long period of time...

FWIW The only thing i've ever done to my car that has made any noticable difference to gas mileage (including fitting the turbo) was when I replaced the front o2 sensor .

Yeah, my front O2 has 113,000 on it, probably wouldn't hurt to replace it. I am also getting my injectors cleaned, balanced, etc. locally pretty soon. I am not doing either to gain MPG but I wonder if it will help.

I warm up my car by oil temps daily (usually 160F-170F before I pull away). I drive my car everyday. As hot as it has been lately, my car never really gets a real chance to cool off. For instance, I get to work at around 9AM and when I go to lunch at 12PM, my oil temps are still like 110-120F.

For example, I have been back from lunch for 4 hours and my car has been sitting in covered parking for all of that time and I just ran out an checked and my oil temp is 117F.

There are occasions when I pull out of my driveway when oil temps are 130F-150F but I never rev above 4,000 RPMS until my oil temps are 180F+.

But during the summer here in Texas it only takes a minute or two of idling to get the temps up to 180F when my oil thermostat opens.

Another thought...I assume you are using the "required" high test fuel...but have you tried tracking fuel station information? Last year when Shell introduced their new super cool neato nifty Nitrogen enriched fuel I experienced worse gas mileage, pretty sure it was 40 - 60 miles over the course of a tank, than with competeing brands.

I have only used Shell 93 octane is this engine and I typically use the same new Shell station near the house unless I am out of town which is usually to my parenst house and then I use the Shell station near their house. I have only used non Shell gasoline one or two occasions that I can think of and that was on the road in a weird situation where I could not find a Shell station.

I also do not add gas until the gas light comes on 90% of the time.

It is very hot in South Texas in the summer. I grew up in California, Hawaii, and Florida so I am used to a bit of heat

Try to find like a Sunoco or Marathon station if you can. If all else fails...and Im sure yall in the South are going to hate this...but snag some BP. Try it out for a couple drive cycles and see what happens. You might be shocked like I was.

I don't think we have Sunoco, Marathon, or BP around here but I may switch to an alternative for a couple of tanks just to see whats up.

I don't necessarily agree, if I can keep the commitment i'm thinking about keeping a log of this or something similar when I get my car back this week. New engine ftw!

Yeah I know, I have been driving it for 114,000 miles. I'm not worried about the mileage, it's the inconsistency I'm watching (not worried about). Plus I am a car geek, this is fun for me.
