LED 3rd Brakelight

Have any of you installed an LED third brakelight on your RX8? If so, and you installed a load resistor, how many ohms and at what wattage did you use?

Thanksss

You don't need a load resistor for the LED brake light. In fact, it is recommended that you don't run a resistor on a constant-load circuit, such as a brake light or running light. The resistors are only necessary on your turn signals to prevent the rapid flash, lamp out indication. Just plug it in and you're good to go!

I dunno about that. I installed it and it caused by Traction Control and DSC lights to come on. I drove it out of town at night and the cruise control disengaged when I turned on my parking/headlights. When I removed the LED brakelight and re-installed the OEM, everything was fine again.

locally, we have three four people with the LED 3rd light and no one has ever had issues. Just use the rubber grommet from the OEM one because the one that comes with the light is too stiff.
I think this mod is a must, especially for the Series II guys.

I cannot embed pics in this sub forum but here you go.

LED's in the brake lights, etc. can cause havoc. Seen it a few times.

My LED lamp must be different. I have two wires coming from the lamp, a black one and a red one. It doesn't have a rubber grommet.

Your light can't be different, they are all the same. In this vid he does not remove the rubber grommet but trust me, grungepup here in out group has installed a few of these and he does it the same each time and it comes out perfect.

Wow I looked at that video before I bought the lamp, and that is the company that I purchased it from! Zonkspeed or something like that. I called them about this issue and they told me that I needed to get a load resistor and that I could purchase one from PepBoys or Autozone.... negative.

I dunno man, PM grungepup. We have 5 RX-8's locally with the LED 3rd brake light and none of them have load resistors and I know grungepup and shinka-mami have had their lights for a few years now.

I guess there's always one, but that truly doesn't make sense to me. Like 9KRPMRX8, I, too know many people who run LEDs and have never had a problem...myself included.

do you also have LEDs in any of your tail lights? the demands on the electrical system are different for LEDS and can cause issues with all kinds of other things

The people that made that video is the same company I bought my brake light from. NO resistor and have no issues. Works great.
