Is Keyless Entry Standard On An 2004 RX8?

I am still having trouble trying to program my Keyless Entry I got for Christmas onto my 8. I read one of the papers that came with the fob, and it mentioned that the car might not have a Keyless Entry system.

Is Keyless Entry standard on an RX8?

The 2004's didn't have a keyless option, the attached photo is what I received. The only thing available was a key fob. What do you have the one that looks like a switchblade or a credit card?

That is exactly the kind of Keyless Entry Remote that I received in the mail. So you mean that my 04 doesn't have Keyless Entry?

Keyless is standard for all Mazdas since at least 2004, if not earlier. What type of keyless changes though.

2004 I believe normally had the keyless that Expo pictured above, with a separate key.

2005 they changed to a 1-piece, where the key is a 'switchblade' setup within the keyless enclosure.

2006 (I believe) is when they added the option for the wallet one, where it senses you are close and unlocks for you.

Programming a FOB to your car yourself is really only possible if you have at least 1 working keyless FOB on hand. If the FOB you have isn't working, or you don't have a FOB, just a key, then you need a couple hundred bucks and a dealer, unfortunately. It's one of the things they like to rape us on that we can't really get around.

From your last post what you received was indeed a 2004 Mazda key fob and would work with your car once it is programed. Do you have at least one working fob and how many original keys do you have?

So wait, do you think if you were willing you shell out the cash that you could buy one of the newer sets of keys for an older car?

I bought the car used, and I was only given 1 key when I bought the car.

I believe so. That would be a question Ash might be able to answer, as he was/(is?) a Mazda parts guy, so he should be able to provide insight if it wasn't possible. I doubt you could get the GT touchless entry of the 2006+ for 04, 05, or non-GT 06+, since that would be a hardware change as well, but the standard push-button-keyless system should be compatible.

Ahh, awesome thank you! do you have any idea how much a new key would cost? I hear the key itself isn't nearly as expensive as paying the dealership to program it.

I lost one key to my wife's Mazda5, and then the battery failed in the other and lost the programming. I was quoted $186 EACH to get a pair of keys back. I imagine part of that is labor, part of that is the key itself. I don't know the breakout.

I programmed my remote (I bought a switchblade) with only an original key and a valet key I had made at the dealer. Mine's also an '04. Took about 5 min's to program both the key and remote part of the switchblade.

Were you able to program an original mazda switchblade key to unlock a 2004 model? If so, where did you get the key?

The switchblade can just be treated as a key and a remote. You will still need to get the key cut.

You definitely need a second key. I got a valet key made, just so I'd have one. I was able to program my remote without having another remote, though I think others have not had luck doing so, so ymmv.

price from a dealer

and to answer the question about how much it cost the have the dealership program a key and remote,my dealership here in jacksonville fl quoted me 95 to register a key and do the remote also if i provided one.so my guess i one hour of labor .the key they said was 38.00 and the remote was 141.00.thats for an 04 rx8.
