Jerking transmision and hic ups

Any of you experience any kind of jerking when the car is cold and you put it in first gear or D and start going for up to 25-30mph and then is gone? And what about the hicups I get when the car is idleling at normal temp. My dealer said that is normal for a rotary. Is this true?

I don't get any jerking motion, but my car 'hiccups' while idling. I'm guessing it's just the very rich setting during idle. I don't know if its normal or not though.

The rotary is much happier if you let it warm up for just a minute or two before you put it in gear and take off, especially in colder temps. A few hiccups are also par for the course. My RX-8 does it, my RX-7 is the same, in fact worse because of exhaust mods.

So the hicups are normal for the rotary engine? I don't thing a car should have hicups (I never incounter such thing before and I owned more the 20 cars in 20 years)!

One thing that I noticed on occasion, and might be related, is that if I slowly rev the engine to 3K after starting it up cold, it seems to stutter a little at certain RPMs. If I give it a couple of rev's, then its fine. Maybe it has to do with the excess fuel injected during a cold start that takes a few minutes/revs to clear out - the same excess fuel that would leave it flooded if it was shut down then. Maybe the same cause of your "jerking".

Anyone else see this?

I used to have the same jerking problem around the same speed. Whenever I was in 2nd, and running around 3.5-4K the car would surge and it felt like some 15 year old was driving (not the case). On a few occasions, I could hold the throttle really steady and after a few seconds at that RPM/speed, it was smooth, but if I modulated it at all it'd go all herky-jerky again.

But now for the good news (at least for me)... I had my car in last week for the recalls and I asked them to reflash the PCM to get the 'L' update (I told them what I wanted, and said that if they needed an official reason, "it was idling rough"). With the update, the car is much easier to drive and doesn't have the surging issues it did before - traffic doesn't seem to be the nightmare it used to be.

All that being said, I dont know if that would work for you - mine was on the second boat over, back in July, and I was still on the original PCM settings. Happily that's not the case anymore.

BTW - my 83 RX-7 doesn't do any of this - it seems to be only with the 8.

Mine "hicups" at idle too. But, a friend of mine has an EVO that does the same thing and that's a totaly different engine. I definitly let mine warm up a little before hitting the road. Heck, my tranny doesn't like being shifted for the first mile or so either. It smooths out fairly quickly. It's all much smoother when it's warmed up a little.

I never noticed the hiccup when I was driving my car, but I let my brother in law drive the car and I thought something was wrong. As it turns out... I am in the habbit of Squeezing the throttle and not stomping on it (yah race school is worth it). I found that if I stomp on the gas, I get surges like the ones you were talking about (actually more like the engine is bogged down).

Oh... the other time I notice a slight decrease in power is when the variable duct opens up. Just a slight hesitation there. Anyways hope this was helpful.

Thanks guys. This help for several reasons. First I don't have the "L" upgrade just yet. Second, I notice that it doesent happen when warm up and then get moving.

Now however, I get jerking all the time at high speeds above 60mph. So I'm going to take in for checking and upgrade and will see...

I finnaly got it done. Men now that I got the "L" flash the car does not have the hic-ups and is faster right of the first gear. I had some hessitation before but now is gone. The vibration is still there starting around 50mph and up but now is less noticable.

For you guys that did have the "L" flash yet run and get it. You want be sorry!
